Cost of living increases

The cause of current inflation is expensive power. By now, approaching the first 1/4 of the 21st century power should be borderline free. It’s the biggest driver of economic growth and wealth . It’s not even , if you excuse the pun, rocket science.. if you can move, make, create, heat, cool manufacture more with less cost then people get richer ..
For some reason Our world leaders seem to think we need to pay Victorian prices for our power. Expect Victorian standards of living to go with it..

interest rates are the cost of money it is controlled centrally much like the price of land ..
money has been free, to actually cheaper than free, for over a decade .. well if you have a house or two you can leverage off….
this has led, unsurprisingly to ludicrous house prices , and via the creation of money due to increased debt and actual government printing of money , to even more inflation..
. The disparity of wealth gets larger.
we are perfectly aligned for an asset price fall, especially in property.

the solution to a power price inflation spike isn’t grants and loans and handouts. It’s more supply. Try getting that past todays eco loons ..

the solution to property prices inflation is of course more supply, or it that case maybe taxing land rather than income and hard work. That of course in another huge black hole of a discussion

If the power supply shortage is caused by war, how, in the short term do you increase supply?

Not sure why you've bought "eco loons" into this, in the long term renewable energy would be a far more viable way to achieve borderline free energy, it's basically impossible with fossil fuels. The main reason that stuff like oil is so expensive is that there's a finite amount of it and it isn't distributed evenly between countries (meaning the countries that do have oil have a strong bargaining position with everyone else).

It's coming through that Norway supplies us with a quarter of our imported electric through a North Sea inter connector link, and as they are in for rationing. they are keeping any juice they have got. So obviously that could hit electric bills even more.

We can’t make any further reductions to our daily elec / gas usage, we’re at an all-time low now. As for Ofgem, jeez…two decades of incompetence…

Shoot Putin?
and therein is one of the problems
All this talk of rises both this year and next is indeed very worrying.
I know lots of people are say older people/disabled and people on benefits will suffer but I also think that lots of people who are just over the threshold for help and support will equally suffer.

It isn't hindsight to say that selling off of major areas of our power to french energy companies, or relying on china for nuclear investment was a rotten set of decisions in amongst a whole batch of such idiocy.
If it looked like a bad deal to just about any thinking person, (same as the contracts to private firms to build schools, hospitals, prisons etc and rent them back to UK Guv at BIG profits) some time soon there must be a loud crash of tons of pennies dropping that these political decisions were crooked, corrupt AND criminal.

I know this is delving into politics but unfortunately this is a consequence of first past the post elections, when you can lose complete power with a 5% swing you can't afford to do costly long term investments, most voters will only care about how things like finances look in the short term. As a result politicians are encouraged to do things that will pay off in time for the next election to stay in power even if it isn't the best thing for the country in the long term.

Short-termism extends beyond just politics. It seems an entire way of life in the UK nowadays.

The UK has needed to invest in new power stations for years now. Successive governments have continually put off the decision and kicked the can down the road whilst dithering on an energy strategy. Even easy gains - such as enhanced energy efficiency through insulation - have largely been ignored.

With planning and foresight we’d have already made the switch to renewable energy and wouldn’t be so vulnerable to fluctuations in gas or oil prices and would also have improved the appalling air quality.

Out of curiosity what are the renewable energy sources we could use?
