Cover versions that will divide opinion

The Slits did a version of Heard it through the Grapevine which may offend some (if I could get access to sound clips at work)

my argument exactly, do a cover version totally differently...

has anyone mentioned Oasis being a third rate Beatles covers band?

The Saints--river deep, mountain high
The Saints--Lipstick on your collar
UK Subs----She's Not There
The Dickies--Paranoid
The Dickies--Sounds of Silence
The Rezillos--Glad all over
David Bowie--Pin Ups LP
The Damned--White rabbits
China Drum---Wuthering Heights

nahh its a lazy insult

yea, cant be arsed today, but at least you recognised it as an insult, and therefore in the back of your mind, agreed with it. touched a slight nerve, otherwise there wouldnt have been a response.

Keeping up the theme of that era

Stiff little fingers - Running Bear and White Christmas
Pistols - Pretty Thing
Slade - Born To Be Wild
The Chords - Hold on I'm Coming

I thought the Beatles murdered Candy Flip's classic post rave chill out tune Strawberry fields forever.

On the subject of Covers, Bif Bam Pow, a local covers band, are playing at the Oakwood sometime this month. 60's 70's northern soul, Mod type of stuff.
They are good fun. (Grayhound has had them at the Marlbro' a few times)

As a few have already mentioned, the best covers - and let's face it, most are bland and awful - are those that reinvent the song to the point where most people assume it's the original.

Probably the best example of this is Soft Cell's Tainted Love, which was originally a Motown hit in the 60s but the average person won't know that. Go West by Pet Shop Boys is another one and, although most people still acknowledge the original by Tears For Fears (which is a classic), I thought Gary Jules' version of Mad World was absolutely awesome.

The Zutons' version of Valerie will probably be forgotten by the public in the future, which is a shame as it's a great song, but I think Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse did give it a more vibrant edge.
