Im sure Mooney would do better if we played 2 wingers like Orient did when he was prolific. Hitting long balls or asking him to spring the offside trap is not his strength. Same when Barnard came back we just hit it long or treid to ask him to outpace defenders who were far quicker.

my feelings on Mooney are same as Pigott and that they are 'penalty box' players ie. plenty of decent service from out wide and they will convert chances. Barnett and Hunt are much better adapted to dropping deep, holding the ball up and bringing other players into the game.

If we were to go with Worrall/McLoughlin wide, supported by Coker/O'Neill, we would have FOUR players wide all capable of delivering decent crosses. Add in Payne/Wordsworth feeding chances through the middle and I reckon you would see a lot more goals from Mooney (and Pigott, when he was here). Asking Mooney to play a number 10 role (as he did on Tuesday) is just not going to work, and we will never get the best out of him. I genuinely like Mooney, and think there is quality there, but Tuesday was his worst game for us (that I have seen - based only on home games) and I wasn't remotely surprised when he was taken off.

I assume that if we played with wingers they will be instructed to cross the ball under head height ? Pretty pointless putting in a cross that he has to challenge for in the air

Yeah, but they would have to make a choice, the right height for Mooney or the right height for Payne and Hunt. There is probably about a metre difference. Tough choice.

Don't think the system is totally to blame, very much a footballer on his way down. 1 goal in 19 this season, will be non league next season.

Geezer has no heart, no balls or stomach for the game! Always a passenger unless one on one with keeper (then he's normally offside)!

Yep i'm his biggest fan

Indeed, but regardless of that his style didn't suit that which the manager was trying to play. Although Barnard was a chairman signing designed to put bums on seats.

There just seems to be a lack of joined up thinking at decision making level.

We've seen too many strikers join whose styles don't fit into what we've been trying to play. We've seen so many players contracts extended only for us to then go out and sign a replacement - or worse still a loanee - within a month or two.

The funny thing is that Barnett said he was licking his lips at signing on loan for a club that puts in so many crosses from the wingers and full backs. As soon as he signs, we stop playing with wingers, and the full backs are encouraged to defend more, Lol.

Funny thing for Barnett to say, as he looks far more of a threat on the ground to me!

He's a threat on the ground and in the air. Watch his goals here and you can see we're not getting the best out of him in the air.

Much obliged 'Seventies'.

Yep, fair point.

Just that from corners, both defending (away at Port Vale) and attacking, in most games, he doesn't seem to have much aerial presence in and around the box.
