Doris Lessing dies

Plenty of people post up RIP thread on here when someone's died, not just me.

Contrary to your assertion, I've been a big fan of Dorris Lessing's since the 70's and was genuinely upset to hear about her death. It's not just family and friends we grieve for,it's also people we believe in.

"Ask not for whom the belll tolls."

It's a part of being human.

Have to concur with that. There's no shame in feeling a bit of empathy when someone you admire or respect in public life shuffles off their mortal coil.

Barna. There's a good quote from Bertrand Russell which I think sums you up.

"There are two motives for reading a book; one, that you enjoy it; the other, that you can boast about it."

And here's a quote from Doris Lessing that you might want to think about:-

"With a library you are free, not confined by temporary political climates. It is the most democratic of institutions because no one - but no one at all - can tell you what to read and when and how."

If you read the library here you'd get soon bored. All about trains. :zzzzz:

Well that's where you and many others differ from myself then Barnard. I can honestly say hand on heart I've never ever got upset at anyone's death apart from family and friends. I was shocked at Diana's death, shocked but not upset. If that makes me cold hearted then so be it and that's why I fail to understand this whole empathy/sympathy thing. Does it make you a better person or human being? No. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

Who on earth is suggesting it does? Certainly not me.

The Diana thing is an interesting one.I was shocked and upset about her death, at the time.

(Possibly because we'd driven under that same underpass in Paris, just a few days before she died there).

Talking about it with English friends here, who'd been unaffected by her death,I gradually realised I'd been conned and taken in by the mass hysteria, which surrounded her untimely demise, what with all the 24/7 media coverage.

You try going and reading a book at 5 am on a Sunday and see how far you get.

Is this the same Doris that worked at Elmsleigh Drive news agents in the late 80's? Lovely woman, used to throw in a few more cola cubes with a smile.

RIP Doris
