I didn't know whether to post this in the current thread or to start a new one, so feel free to merge it if you'd like...
Amidst the madness at Meadow Lane, with foreign investment, Sven Goran Eriksson turning up unannounced and a host of shock signings being unveiled, someone has most definitely been telling porkies.
Not the Qatari tycoon whose money made all of this possible, not Eriksson whose position as Director of Football has played a considerable role in persuading these players to join... Not even Sol himself who, without County's offer, would still be unemployed in a harsh economic climate.
No, it seems Campbell's agent has been lying about Mr. Campbell's age, as the Notts club have offered the former England defender a whopping five year deal, keeping him employed until his 40th birthday.
Make no mistake, Campbell is still well and truely a capable footballer, "I could've signed for a Premier League club," Sol exclaimed in the now much-used Meadow Lane Press room, and a player of Campbell's calibre just doesn't drop three divisions to the basement of professional football. Especially considering the wage cap prevalent in League Two, keeping wage expenditure at 60% of the clubs revenue.
This in mind, you can bet your lifes worth that his contract is littered with clauses designed to usurp The Football League's ruling, as appearance clauses and signing on fees are immune to this meddling, not to mention what a promotion could do to not only his, but his teammates wages.
As expected, McParland has signed players to make the public take heed. Full time Goalscorer and part-time drink-driver Lee Hughes has already been amongst the goals this season, and the capture of Kasper, son of Peter, Schmeichel is an excellent, young addition to the squad. Campbell should slot straight into the defence and lead by example and experience...
What I would say about this signing is, it has made Eriksson's power at the club quite clear. McParland has been benefitted by a great start to the campaign and, whilst he will hold the respect of the dressing room and stands, it won't take much for a knee jerk Qatari reaction to oust him and had the reigns to the Swede holding the cheque book.
