Youth Team
I wrote this after the game, just been able to post it now that my registration has completed.
Man of the match for me was Adam Barrett, who put in an absolutely outstanding display. He won pretty much everything at the back and moved forward with style and control in true Alan Hansen fashion. He also had a couple of good chances to score. Barrett was certainly the best player on the pitch. Tremendous work rate throughout the 120 minutes.
Prior also had a good game I thought. He won a lot of headers in the first 30 minutes. He was unlucky for the corner that led to their first goal.
Bentley played well, good free kick first half and a good chance in the second half, decent work rate throughout the game.
Eastwood, flashes of brilliance in the first half, but apart from that an ok game I would say. Decent work rate, wanted to win even if everything didn’t come off.
Gower – Did he play? – Enough said I think.
Gray – Well I may be criticised for this but I thought this was a totally inept display by a striker. He barely won a header all day long; in fact sometimes he barely even got off the ground when going for headers. He looked slow and often wasted the ball. I can’t remember a shot at goal from him. Poor performance.
Jupp – Lazy performance was jogging back after 15 minutes of the game when Ugarte broke free and was one on one with out last defender. Jupp should have been busting a gut to get back and help his fellow defender. Fortunately Ugarte tried to beat the last man and shoot rather than playing a simply ball out to the right for the on rushing Wrexham player, who was busting a gut to get forward and would have had clear chance had he been played in. Lack of desire from Jupp. If I was manger I couldn’t have that in my team.
As for the game itself it was fairly even but Wrexham were slightly the better side, the Southend players look as if they never really believed they could win it. Perhaps if we had got the first goal we would have grown in belief. I thought the lack of belief was a little odd considering the run the team had just been on, but that certainly came across on the pitch.
The players that stood out were Barrett, Prior, Bentley and Eastwood, the rest had an average game in my view and Gray, Jupp and Gower had poor games. Dreadful defending for the second goal I was so annoyed with that I didn’t see who it was (Wilson ?). I accept that players were tired at that stage, but a simply foot out would have put the ball out of play for a corner. How Gray wasn’t substituted I will never know. Also why were both subs not thrown on as soon as they scored their first goal? There was only 20 minutes of ET left and the players were tired. Two pairs of fresh legs straight on with the instructions to run their hearts out for 20 minutes and get us a goal.
All in all a disappointing day, not just because we lost but because the team never played to its potential. Quite simply we needed a few more Barrett’s on the pitch. It was an injustice that he was on the losing side.
Cheers
