I was going to put this into Homer's Bar but decided it probably belonged here. Leaving aside the immediate devastating impact of this event, I was absolutely astonished that passengers are allowed to carry guns in their luggage on American airlines. Listening to 'experts' yesterday it seems that other countries also allow it, albeit ammunition should be carried separately. I understand that the gun culture in the States is very entrenched, but how many more innocent lives have to be lost before the politicians and public say 'enough' and apply some more controls?

If you carry a gun, the reasoning is you can stop these kinds of attacks.....oh hang on.....

The NRA is so powerful in the States....thousands of innocent lives have already been lost (Sandy Hook for example) and nothing has changed and never will.

People do and are allowed to carry guns on British flights. Not ordinary members of the public but those the work for the security industry such as those who protect ships around the Horn of Africa.

They operate under the same rules you can't have the guns loaded, the ammunition has to go in the hold. They have to store the weapons in certain licenced buildings when in Britain and when they fly usually the police give them an escort from the store to the airport.

You may well have sat next to someone and you wouldn't even know it. British firms are now the leading the way in this field, even being called in to protect rhinos in Africa. Some of the wealthiest Americans insist on British security because of their professionalism and track record.

Yes, I know and understand that. What does appear so frightening is that ordinary passengers can do that in the States.

Whilst the NRA continues to exist and holds on to the immense political and financial control it has over the powers that be both at state and national level nothing, absolutely nothing, will ever change. You could have a Sandy Hook every month for a whole year and still nothing would change.

The vast majority of the American public want answers. Just not any of the one's that would work.

Think it probably does belong in the pub section, tbh.

Not quite sure what's "political" about some ex-US serviceman going beserk.

Oh btw,on all El Al planes there's an armed plain clothes security guard too.

I put it here because of the political lack of will to do anything positive to curtail some of these incidents. Although we are not in America, that is where the real meat of the discussion is.

Armed security did.

They actually shot dead 2 hijackers in the early 70's on an El AL flight coming into London. They pilot broadcasts a code word which means he is about to dive the plane. Security fasten seat belts and by the time the hijackers had picked themselves off the floor the security had unbuckled and shot them dead, with airplane friendly bullets of course.

I believe that since 9-11 that's pretty standard on airlines.

Completely agree.

America is lost up its own backside, allowing continued gun carnage is morally bankrupt,it's about the dollar and selling lots of guns.

Whilst theres obviously an industry with lots of money there the gun issue is more about way of life and their identity than about the money. Whilst the gun manafacturers will obviously support keeping them its the Americans themselves who wont give them up, and they arent making money on guns they are spending it. They feel its their right to arm themselves and its part of the American Culture.

Whether it makes sense or not they wont ever get rid of guns over there.

Here's as good breakdown of some stats from 2015.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news...special-report-fixing-gun-violence-in-america

13000 dead in that year alone. :stunned:

Not sure what your trying to prove we have tightened our gun laws over the years but the US can't because of the most powerful of all lobby groups...The NRA.

Even if the completely banned the sale of any weapons today, as they have more guns than people the crime would never end.

As that article says in some cities 95% of the victims of gun crime are black. What it didn't say is that 97% of black victims are killed by black men. Nearly always with an illegally held weapon as they will already have done a prison sentence for robbery or violence.

So what would be your answer to it all ?

The US have tightened their laws even with the NRA.

Law on ownership in New York and California, changes to automatic weapons etc.

Total ban wont happen though.

The funny thing is they have banned airsoft guns in Maryland. So you can own one that shoots bullets but not plastic pellets.

Some laws that were brought in, not all, have been dropped since.
