Post-Match Thread and Ratings Gateshead 1-1 Southend United

What he does next is drop his head, and half shrug.
What Kensdale, in a few seconds after the ball is picked out of the net, does is remonstrate with him; arms outstretched.
What Mooney does is much the same. Is he saying sorry, or something else?
That's a question for him, one supposes.
He looked disappointed. Should he have looked happy instead?

Was not at Gateshead but was at Altrincham. Mooney was brought on as a sub, 20-25 minutes from the end. He was constantly moving into space, always looking for the ball, disappointed when he was not given it , very direct when he did. He looked one of our better players in the cameo he was allowed.
He has disappointed many but I saw nothing wrong with his attitude. He’s not much good at tackling but that’s not what he was brought in for.

A bitterly cold afternoon in the North East not helped when we had to walk from the away car park all the way round the stadium to get in (after a few beers at The Schooner). Last year we had direct access? Stewarding appeared strange and they would not let some of our fans collect their banners towards the end of the game, very antagonistic? for those who wanted to get away sharpish. The game we started slowly and i feared a repeat of last season after Wearne scored early. Dan Mooney being the villian for giving the ball away in the centre of the pitch and then just trotting back nonchantly, without trying to retreive his mistake., allowing a direct run on goal. Our press was slow, midfield decimated by injury and Mooney having one of his not wanting to be there days in the centre of the park.
Thankfully we got to half time only one behind, Kev changed it, Mooney out to the right before being quickly substituted by a more inspired Wood. We were more solid and worked our way back into the game and found another gear, Gateshead faded, first half you would have thought we had played Tuesday and not Gateshead. Up pops Cardwell doing what all good no.9's do and put in a rebound from the keeper whilst on the 6 yard line.

Martin 8
Kabongolo 8
Kensdale 7.5
Ralph 7.5
Scott-Morriss 7
Mooney 4.5
Taylor 6.5
Husin 7
Bridge 7.5
Cardwell 8 MOTM
Kanu 6

Wood 6.5
Vilhete 5.5

Dave Martin had another good performance and was instrumental in keeping us in the game. Kabongolo impressed also and made some good interceptions from crosses. But must give MOTM edge to Cardwell for his persistence and hard work on the back of a little bit of a barren run for him. In the end a more than useful point which looked beyond us in the first half and reward for all that travelled. 3 home Saturday's on the trot next which is most welcome after the near 600 mile trek on Saturday. What he should have looked is neither. He should have got on his bike and done something about it.
He's barely six or seven yards from the ball when the Heed man takes over.
His head drops and even had it been futile, he should have attempted to atone for his mistake by tracking back full steam.
I would venture that's why so many here are making much of it.
Players make mistakes all the time, it's what they do next that equally matters.

He is a good winger in a team that doesn’t play wingers….he can’t play wing back and is only ever asked to play out of position. The alternative formation that would suit him if we don’t play wingers is 433 or 343, with him on the right of the front 3… be interesting to know when we signed him what formation were we intending to play? Or did we think we could turn him into something?

He has looked much better coming on later on in a more attacking role especially when the other side is chasing the game. Very good on the counter.

Is it our fault we can’t accommodate him having signed him or his for not being able to adapt a play a different role?

He has talent hopefully we and he work out how to make it count.

...which makes what they achieve all the more remarkable.
They played us off the park first half, which Kev admitted. They've done it to others this season as well, so it looks as if two bob goes a long way in NE10.
Need more than a couple of bob up there with pies £4 and petrol 170p 🤔
