Fri 30 Sep 1983 Scunthorpe U. 1 - 6 Southend Utd

This was my one and only visit to Scunthorpe. One to remember for the famous long range pile driver from Micky Stead

Another moment less pleasant was the confrontation withy the Leeds fans that my friends and I had to encounter after the game. Despite having a "1 Bobby" police escort back to the station we still had to peg it back and avoid spending the night there if we'd had missed the last train. Having the Leeds fans on our backs, for one individual literally, gave us additional topics to discuss on the journey home.

I been Southampton but I've never been to Scunthorpe.

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

An old match report from my last trip to Scunthorpe in October 1998. How bad was the team back then under Alvin.

'Club before country, thats my policy even if we are away at Scunthorpe, and afterwards I was glad I went to Scunny rather than watched England. When the teams came out I could hardly believe my eyes. Three strikers away from home, no Clarke, and Burns playing right wing back, but nevertheless we started brightly and dominated the first twenty minutes, Burns having a excellent game and attacking down the right at every opportunity.
We needed a goal during that period, as from then on it was Scunthorpe who dominated, and it was not hard to see why they are at the top, some of their football was excellent for a third division side and they deservedly went ahead, even though they shouldn't have. Stimmo had been injured 20 minutes previous and it was obvious to the fans that he should have gone off there and then, he was struggling, but Martin only decided to take him off after he had been stripped down the right which indirectly led to the goal.
After the goal we were dreadful, but somehow we were only one down, cries of We're **** and were sick of it went out, and this seemed to have a positive effect. After 15 minutes of calling for Clarkie, he was introduced and we actually started to attack.
Even though Stimmo has been solid this season, I do like Nathan Jones and Clarke playing together on the left. We created more chances in the 15 minutes they were together on the pitch that the other 75 minutes. I did still think we wouldn't score though until, with about 5 minutes left, Clarke put a ball into the box which came out to the edge of the area, which Burns smashed into the top right hand corner.
It looked brilliant from behind the goal. It was end to end after that, Margetson made an absolutely unbelievable save just after we scored, and then Scunthorpe were denied what looked to be a penalty. In the dying minutes Beard had a shot saved by the keepers legs.
Overall, you have to be happy with getting a point at a top of the league team, but it just angers me when I, and everybody else, know how we can play and produce football like last week at Rochdale and for the majority of the game on Saturday. If we had played like we did for the last 15 minutes for the entire 90 it would have been an easy victory.
Performance wise, Margetson was outstanding and easily the man of the match, the defence was reasonably sound, and Beard won the ball well, but didn't really know what to do when he had it. Burns was excellent, and when we have a full squad should definitely be an attacking midfielder. Livett was a joke, and the two forwards had their usual poor game. The subs Jones and Clarke were both excellent.'

Team: Margetson (9), Burns (8), Stimson (6), Morley (6), Newman (7), Coleman (7), Beard (7), Livett (4), Conlon (5), Whyte (5), Fitzpatrick (6).
Subs: Jones for Stimson (8); Clarke for Livett (8) Not Used: Roget

Saturday 7th November 2015. Scunthorpe 2-1 Southend. We were ****.

Just the twice, a 2 nil defeat many years ago and the 2-2 draw of 2? years ago that is "famous" for the 2nd half fight back and goals from JW and Egan.

I have been a number of times ......... one game sticks out as Curruthers was playing for them. Didn't we release him because he was too old or trouble in the changing room or something like that. And I think he scored against us as well. Dark days. :'(

The first time I went to the new (current) ground was just to tick the ground off as I was passing. An evening game I think but I can't remember who Scunny were playing.

The reason I remember it was because it was in the days when you had to have a membership card to get in. Obviously I didn't have one for Scunny or the opposition so was I refused a ticket/entry.

That was just one of the many unfortunate affects of the stupidity by the mindless few had on real fans who were interested in football. It made going to random away games when travelling the country very difficult.

Anyway I hung around a while and finally I was allowed in very close to kick-off.

Rubbish game. Ground visited. Tick. Move on. Tick.

Was there in August 1970 and also 25 April 1972 on a Tuesday night when a Billy Best equaliser clinched our first ever promotion. In that season 9 outfield players started over 40 league games with goalkeeping shared between Derek Bellotti and John Roberts - the days before squad rotation! I'm surprised no one else has mentioned the game yet - a rare coach trip for me.

I'm sure that I was also there in Sept 1977 when Mickey Laverick and Derrick Parker gave us a rare win in Scunthorpe.

Only time I went to Scunny was a midweek game, can't remember the season but must be about 10 years ago. I thought I was cutting fine to get there for kick off and didn't realise they kicked off at 7.30pm for the steel shift workers!! They let me in after banging enough on the turnstile doors but I couldn't help think 'how northern'!

That was the game when a lad got 'taxed' for his clothes. And I mean all of them bar his socks and undercrackers. Believe he went home with a blanket wrapped round him.

Was waiting for someone to mention the 1972 promotion game to tell me the exact date. I wasn't there as I was only 14 and a school night, but I can clearly remember waiting for the results to come on the radio knowing that a point was enough for promotion. I can also still picture vividly exactly where I was standing in the house when the score finally came through, and we had done it - my memory of this is far more vivid than my wife asking me to put up some shelves yesterday.
