No they beat Bristol City fairly and squarely 5-1 on aggregate that year.

The following year the competition did not complete. St Mirren were to host Coventry City in the second leg of the final but, due to lack of interest and a congested fixture list the tie, which was poised at 1-1 following the first leg at Highfield Road, was never completed.

Don't where you got your info about the last Anglo-Scottish Cup final. The year after St Mirren beat Bristol City in the final, Chesterfield beat Notts County in the final AS cup final.

Yes, sorry I missed that one! As above, the incomplete one was a few years later after a gap of a few years but that was the very last one!.

Played between the top scorers in each division, right? First use of penalty shoot-outs in the UK I think.
The first penalty shoot out in England was in the Watney Cup in 1970 when Manchester United beat Hull City 4-3 at Boothferry Park after the match ended in a 1-1 draw. In the penalty shoot-out George Best scored the very first one and the first player to miss was Denis Law whose spot kick was saved by former Southend United goalkeeper Ian McKechnie(RIP). McKechnie then missed his own spot kick when he hit the crossbar putting Manchester United through to the final where they lost 4-1 to Derby County at the Baseball Ground in front of an attendance of 32,049. Sadly Ian died of a suspected heart attack in June 2015 aged just 73.
Ian McKechnie made over 70 appearances in league and cup matches for Southend United from 1964-66 losing his place in the team in January 1966 to former Liverpool goalkeeper Trevor Roberts. He joined Hull City in the summer of 1966.

Not the only penalty kick McKechnie missed.
