But that is my point. Peterborough and is England U-21. Would never have happened with Dan Bentley playing for Southend and he is a damn sight better than that Fulham 'keeper that was U21 last season

But it wouldn't have happened with Peterborough either had any of the other goalkeepers been available. He happened to still be in the country, presumably because he couldn't afford a summer holiday!

A bit disingenuous I think as other 'keepers were injured and there must have been some in the Championship etc. better placed than a Peterborough 'keeper. I think it is a case that some get looked at (Peterborough - probably due to the loudmouth being one) while others do not. I believe Bentley should have been given an under-21 opportunity last year and had he played for Peterborough or MK Dons etc. he would have been given that chance.

Ted Smith is a different matter as it is a younger age group.

The Fat Judus had fooled the FA into thinking he had the best goalkeeper in the world .

It was May, they were all on holiday, and he was with the U21 squad at the time (Ok, he probably could afford a summer holiday) so was a) available when everyone else wasn't, and b) was match sharp because he hadn't had a break from training.

Nobody was on holiday! Injured maybe but not sunning themselves.

No. Players never go on holiday in May/June. He was available and match sharp. They picked him. It's not because Fat Fry talked him up, it's because he was around when no-one else was. IIRC JL even admitted that himself.

What a stupid subject. Bentley would be well down the list. After his indifferent performances this season, I think the last thing in the England camp is Bentleys form.

Still looks like he's in the top 10 which is still something to be proud of.

Thank you for your positive support on this.
It is appreciated.

He's a long way off. The likes of Ruddy, Foster and Pickford would, quite rightly, get the nod over Bentley. Personally I would say Dan is better than the likes of Amos, but even he would be above Bentley in the pecking order. Amos has played for Manchester United, lots of appearances in the Championship and represented England at numerous age categories. The FA tend to hold a certain bias towards players who have represented England at youth levels, so players like Amos will always be favoured over Bentley.

If he has a good season or a good couple of seasons at Championship level, only then might he come into contention.

if that's true then young Ted could be ahead of Bentley in the pecking order in the next 2 or 3 years...

I doubt Bentley's even going to be recognised in the League One PFA team of the year, so (rightly or wrongly) he'll be way down the list.

These are the English keepers playing regularly in the Championship.

Blackburn - Jason Steele
Bolton - Ben Amos
Brentford - David Button
Brighton - David Stockdale
Bristol City - Frank Fielding
Burnley - Tom Heaton
Charlton - Nick Pope
Derby - Scott Carson
Fulham - Andy Lonergan
Huddersfield - Jed Steer
Ipswich - Dean Gerken
Franchise FC - David Martin
QPR - Rob Green/Alex Smithies

I think they're unlikely to catapult a kid from League One who hasn't been in their system over them.

It certainly won't be with us. If there are still any doubters about Dan actually leaving....................

Is that with his Southend or Bolton hat on?

Looking at that list and one or two of the other names mentioned , I guess he probably doesn't even quite make the top 20.

When clubs from the Premiership or the likes of Celtic take an interest they are looking at Dan's potential as he is still young for a keeper. They are not judging him solely on his ability at the moment. Nor will they be horrified by a freak goal v Gillingham or Millwall. These clubs clearly think he will be much higher up the list than many shrimpers.

No doubt all will be revealed come close season. Until then intrigue and best guessing will abound on here, it's what SZ does.

the above is fair comment- but the OP's post was about playing for England now- not ihis potential for the future

Yes your right. Often countries take a young keeper as third choice as they know he won't actually play. Remember Walcott being picked, just for squad experience, when of course there were better players around at the time.

John Ruddy has a cap and would probably be ahead.

U21s are Joe Wildsmith (Sheffield Wednesday), Christian Walton (Brighton) and Jordan Pickford (Sunderland). Pickford is definitely ahead of Bentley but don't think the other two are (only a couple of appearances during loans).

Others I'd suggest are ahead of Bentley are David Stockdale, Frank Fielding and Ben Amos.

I've seen Bentley wear a Hoodie, does that count towards playing for England?
