Just returned from watching CD Jávea train and spent a couple of hours in the company of Kenny Brown, who made six appearances for the Shrimpers in 1996, on loan from West Ham United. He's about to become the new Director of Football at CD Jávea after a couple of years involvement with FC Torrevieja. He remembers his time at Southend with affection, although that fondness might be playing with his memory as he claimed the Shrimpers went undefeated during his time at Roots Hall ("a win and five draws, weren'it). Actually, Kenny, it was a win, a loss and four draws but lets got be too pedantic, eh? Smashing fella and he also rates Tilly as one of the best young managers in the game today ...

Blimey - sounds like CD Javea are moving up in the world, Mike - a Director of Football? Is your local side about to push for the big time, do you think?

If so, you jammy bugger... promotions in Southend and Spain to celebrate...!

Yep. The five-year plan is to aim for the Segunda División B (the third level in the Spanish league system) which is two steps above the Regional Preferente. It might not sound too ambitious but you have to bear in mind that the only automatic promotion in Spain is between the Primera and Segunda A Divisiónes; for everyone else it's a long-winded process of promotion play-offs, very much a lottery. So Segunda B is our first target and certainly achievable providing everyone at the club pulls in the same direction (which is certainly not the case at the moment).

One of Kenny's roles will be assist with the re-structuring of the 'cantera' system (essentially the youth academy; 'cantera' means 'quarry') which will probably take a couple of years.
