I just found this account of the Kursaal :

The Kursaal opened in 1901 so this year marks its centenary. Apart from the fairground itself with its Gallopers, Cyclone Coaster, Scenic Railway, Caterpillar, Laugh in the Dark, Joy Wheel and other famous rides there were many other side shows in the grounds and activities and events in the Kursaal buildings. These included Al Capone’s actual car, Eric – a 65 tonne whale, Dick Harrow – the world’s heaviest man, Sacco the Fasting man, famous Christmas circuses, the Kursaal Zoo, trade and ideal home fairs, sporting events and dancing in the ballroom.

So perhaps thats where your elephant came from.
