Loanee watch 2022-23

For those after their weekend football fix this Bonfire Night weekend and want a Southend flavour

Tommy Davis’s Hampton and Richmond are at Dulwich Hamlet
Jon Benton’s Braintree are at Dartford in an intriguing too of the table clash
Louie Arrowsmith’s Heybridge play at Grays
Luke Reeve’s Tilbury are at home to the magnificently named New Salamis

The u18s are also at home (Boots and Laces) to Wimbledon I believe.

If you do go, please report back on how our youngsters are doing

Off to canvey v bishop stortford on Saturday, should be a good one but not sure if any Southend lads in the canvey lineup.

Unfortunately this one has been postponed, due to AFC Wimbledon’s participation in The FA Youth Cup last night, I think. Next up for the U18s are Luton Town on 12th November, with the Hatters bringing their 100% league record to Boots & Laces a few hours before the Dorking game at Roots Hall.

NLS
Tommy Davis dropped to the bench for Hampton and Richmond’s trip to Dulwich. His manager said it was harsh on him as he’d been playing well but at some stage they had to go with their own players. 10 men Hampton ended up losing 3-2 to a late penalty.

Jon Benton was up against league leaders Dartford. After a goalless first half they seemed in it but they conceded a penalty soon after the restart and despite Dartford going down to 10 men for a foul on Matt Rush just after they’d taken the lead, Braintree slumped to a 4-1 defeat.

Isthmian North
Luke Reeve’s Tilbury fell behind after just 7 minutes to New Salamis. They equalised on 32 minutes but a goal on the hour meant they fell to defeat. New Salamis are 11th, Tilbury 14th but precariously close to the relegation spots with just 11 points from 12 games.

Louie Arrowsmith’s Heybridge took the lead on 18 minutes at 4th placed Grays but the home team equalised just before half-time. Heybridge remain 8th with that draw.

NL S
Tommy Davis was on the bench once more as Hampton stick to their own players. He came on 2 minutes into 4 minutes of injury time as they looked to see our time in a 2-0 win at Chelmsford.

Jon Benton played in Braintree’s 1-0 defeat at Weymouth. Former youth team player Dan Matsuzaka with the only goal late on (Benton was subbed on 66 minutes).

Isthmian North
Luke Reeve was booked in Tilbury’s 2-1 defeat at Felixstowe. Tilbury had taken a 5th minute lead but goals on 63 and then 90 sent Tilbury to another defeat.

Louie Arrowsmith played in Heybridge’s 4-1 win at home to Hullbridge. They raced into a 3-0 lead by half-time. The second half was played in fog but Tilly’s men won out.

Appreciate the updates, @Yorkshire Blue 👍 (if it's your SZ mod prerogative, you fulfill it outstandingly.)

Tommy Davis has been recalled from his loan spell at Hampton and Richmond. With Hampton players returning from injury and them wanting to play their own guys Tommy’s been on the bench last few games and he appears to have been recalled to play in the Essex Senior Cup the other night. I think I heard that the plan was to get him back out playing.

Elsewhere in the NL South Jon Benton was in the Braintree side that drew 0-0 at Farnborough. Benton did round the keeper but he took himself a little bit too far and his shot was cleared off the line. You can see it at about 2:37 here. He was subbed after 73 minutes. SUEPA man Matt Rush was Braintree’s M-o-M.

Isthmian North
Louie Arrowsmith faced leaders AFC Sudbury. Tilly’s men took the lead after just 3 minutes. They doubled it on 25. Sudbury fought back second half scoring straight after the re-start. Heybridge restored their two goal lead on 56 only for the leaders to pull one back 12 minutes later, leaving a nervy half hour for the Swifts to hang on to inflict Sudbury’s first defeat of the season. It seems Louie impressed along the way.

The managers verdict was “Like I said, the boys really had to dig in”.

You did. After the Essex Senior Cup tie on Tuesday, Mark Bentley said: “Lads can get held back sometimes, and we want to get them at the right level. I think they can play quite high and National South is perfect for a lot of the lads.”

“There are others that we probably want to get out as well but the current situation means we’re a little bit reluctant until that’s resolved. I’m sure over the next couple of weeks we’ll look to get some more out. Tommy Davis has come back now and we’ll look to try and get him back out as quickly as we can because he wants to play.”

“He’s a good lad, but at the moment defensively we’re sound and we don’t want them just sitting around training because mentally it’s not great for them and we understand that, but we’ve got to make sure the squad is managed as best we can.”

I believe we’ll also be looking to get some of the second-year scholars out on work experience loans shortly as happened last season.

Jack Wood joins NLS Tonbridge.

Alas this almost certainly means ex-Shrimper Lewis Gard is out for a while but a good opportunity for Jack to get some minutes under his belt. Jaden Crowhurst had a good spell for them earlier this season.

Good move for young Jack. No where near the matchday 16 so perfect for him to go out and get minutes under his belt. Wonder if he would have gone out if the B team was properly set up?

NL South
Jack Wood was only on the bench for Tonbridge’s match v Havant. He didn’t get on and they drew 1-1.

Braintree were at home to Hungerford. Jon Benton was involved, linking up with former Shrimper Matt Rush on several occasions. He won their penalty to make it 2-2 and then made it 3 with a 30 yard effort which turned out to be the winner. He was later voted MotM with 52% of the 45 votes cast. Braintree are 5th. Hungerford 22nd.

Isthmian North
Luke Reeve was in the Tilbury side who faced second bottom Gorleston. He was booked on 21 minutes - Tilbury were already two up by then. They then stretched their lead to 4 before Gorleston made things interesting by scoring on 77 and 86 but Tilbury scored a 90th minute penalty to win 5-2.

Louie Arrowsmith’s Heybridge Swifts were up against Felixstowe and Walton. Felixstowe took a 2nd minute lead but Tilly’s men fought back with Arrowsmith setting up their equaliser on 23 minutes. Second half it was Heybridge who scored almost immediately and they held on to record another win. In-form Heybridge are up to 3rd after beating sixth placed Felixstowe.

Benton’s goal was something else as see that posted on twitter, quality strike.

It amazes me reading the threads ,Benton was getting rave reviews last season on his performances whilst out on loan ,and again this season seems to be doing well , can score goals ,gets MOM quite often ,yet cannot get into our match day squads when we are truly lacking a goalscoring midfielder. I wonder if he has upset someone.

Jon Benton was in the Braintree line up at Taunton. He was booked on 81 minutes in what seems to have been a fiesty occasion. It finished 0-0. Jon picked up 26% of the 27 votes cast for MoM.

Of note in the game Matt Rush was subbed immediately after picking up a yellow for a bit of a ding dong.

Jack Wood made his Tonbridge debut at Hungerford alongside former teammate Lewis Gard who was back after injury. The only goal came just before ht from a Gard corner. Jack played 76 minutes (Lewis 78 minutes)

Isthmian North
Louie Arrowsmith played for Heybridge in their 1-1 draw at Lowestoft. He was sent off after 82 minutes.

Luke Reeve was in the Tillbury team who took on Wroxham. Tilbury took a 62nd minute lead but it lasted a minute. It also finished 1-1.

Jon Benson is not in Braintree squad for tonight, they got Jack Paxman in on loan to take his place.
