Mulgrew (not signing)

Truly gutted about Mulgrew, but surely none of us would be disappointed if Sir Chrissy Powell returned? Besides, Powell could teach Herd a thing or two about being a left back... could work out very well indeed?

Matt

This seems to get rumoured every year, and I am not sure why? Chrissy Powell has already stated he would not return to us as a player now and risk damaging the unbelievable reputation he left here with - at his age, it would be inevitable he would not be the player he was when he was with us.

Would I like to see him back? Well my heart would say yes, i'd love to see him pull on the Blue shirt of Southend again, but my head says that a left back of his considerabl years (in footballing terms of course) would be vulnerable to any right winger with an ounce of pace at his disposal.

as mentioned above we dont really have any FACTS on the matter, we may have offered him a contract weeks ago but he decided to hang on for something else, he gets offered the chance to play in the top division in his home country, its a no brainer really, maybe we didnt drag our heels at all but shock horror the PLAYER deceided to go elsewhere

Possibly, but I have it on good authority that Charlie wanted to join us, so something has happened in the last few days.

you say good authority but is it really, he may have said one thing to someone else and another to his agent, we will never know really

That's not really the issue though YB - If we had sorted this out at the end of last season, rather than letting ti get to the middle of Jiuly without signing him, Aberdeen would not have even entered the equation. Not the first time we have missed out because of our apparent dragging of heels - although not being in full effect of the facts, I don't know the exact scenario.

What is interesting is the rumoured price tag - £80,000? I understoof that we weren't prepared to pay the asking price of £150,000, and now he's gone for nigh on half that - who's telling porky pies here?

What we don't know is whether Mulgrew would have signed or whether he was holding out for a move to a top Scottish club and we were only his back-up escape route.

It would be very disappointing if we've missed out because the club dragged their heels, but if Mulgrew was going to hold out and see if something better cropped up, then you can't blame the club.

As for the fee I expect it comes down to the way the deal was constructed. It may well be a fee rising to around £150,000, but with £80,000 payable up front, in which case no-one is telling porkies.

Unfortunately that is very likely the case, whatever, we've lost a decent signing.

Exactly. If the reason we missed out on him was because Tilly and Martin where dragging their heels then thats very, very disappointing as we could see how much he came on will at us.

If he chose Aberdeen over us because of the chance to play for Scotland you can't really knock him for that because Hammell never got near the national team playing for us in the Championship.

Would be interested to see who Tilly has lined up for left back as Osei isn't a left back and Herd isn't ready yet.

That is true, and no one can say for certain how he felt about a move to us on a permanent basis, but I suspect he may well have welcomed it, given the relationship he had with the fans, and how much he seemed to enjoy himself during his time with us.

That said, you may well be right, he may have been holding out for an SPL club to come in for him, in which case, good luck to him.

Either way, we're back at square one, and in desperate need of both a left back and a left sided midfielder.

Who exactly is this un-named source? Is there just one guy going around dropping these little hints, or is there a whole gang of them?

Probably the same source that told everyone we were going to sign Sito, Huckerby, Andy Cole, Nathan Dyer, Wayne Andrews, Ronaldinho, Shergar, Zippy from Rainbow, etc e,tc.

Think you got the wrong end of the stick on the Rainbow tip-off. I think he actually said it was all one big Bungle.

You're right - Chris has said that in the past about us. BUT he's also said it twice in the past about Charlton (where he's possibly even more loved and respected than here, if that's possible) and both times he's ended up re-joining them.

It was me.
Bloke I used to work with supports Aberdeen & he said this is what the Scottish papers are saying today was the fee for Mulgrew. No mention of add-ons etc.

£50,000 according to this report

DON DEAL: Charlie Mulgrew will join up with Aberdeen on Monday.

CHARLIE Mulgrew rejected a more lucrative offer from Swindon Town to seal his Pittodrie switch

Dons chief Willie Miller acted quickly to land the former Celt on a two-year deal in a swift swoop for the left-back from Wolves.

The 22-year-old looked set to join Maurice Malpas at Swindon at the start of the month only to reject a £150,000 transfer.

But Robins boss Malpas tried to hijack Aberdeen’s move for Mulgrew who forced through his SPL return.

“I did have the chance to move to Swindon but it just wasn’t right for me or my family which is why I chose Aberdeen,” said Mulgrew.

“I’m excited by Jimmy Calderwood’s plans and I can’t wait to get started with my new club.

“Jimmy made me feel wanted and was always very positive throughout all the talks we had.”

Miller only just completed the dramatic swoop as the Dons headed off to face Dundee at Dens Park in last night’s friendly which ended 0-0.

The Reds are believed to have paid a fee in the region of £50,000 for the defender, who still had 12 months left on his Wolves deal.

Mulgrew enjoyed a loan spell at Dundee United, and he revealed how Aberdeen’s growing contingent of Tannadice players helped to convince him to move to Pittodrie.

But the Scotland U21 cap was almost forced to admit defeat as Wolves were threatening to withhold his severance fee before thrashing out a deal

“I spoke to Mark Kerr, Lee Miller and Lee Mair before deciding to join Aberdeen,” he said.

“They all said good things about the club and the manager.

“That just helped to make up my mind about what I was doing.

“All three made me feel very welcome when I was on loan at Dundee United from Celtic.

“I’m sure they will help me to settle in at Aberdeen.”

Mulgrew jetted north late yesterday afternoon to sign on with the Dons before returning to England in the evening.

He will now move north on Sunday before reporting for pre-season training the following day.

Calderwood, who is still tracking Darlington’s Tommy Wright, is delighted to have finally landed his man following a long chase all summer.

He said: “Charlie has played at a high level after representing the Scotland U21 side.

“But he’s lost his way recently after doing well on loan at Dundee United.

“We’ve been following his progress because left-back is hard to fill.

“Richard Foster has done well in that role but he’s not a natural left-back.”

Meanwhile, Dons transfer target David McNamee has joined Plymouth Argyle from Coventry City.

Calderwood had earmarked him as a potential replacement for Alan Maybury.
