This is the key point - it doesn't matter who we bring in, we do not set up to score goals. Our strikers since the start of Brown have all been good and many of them have been prolific elsewhere. Barnard 0 goals from open play, Coulthirst 3 goals from open play, even Barry Corr who is proving what a goal machine he can be manfully managed 16 last year but has a third of that already with three games gone this season in a team that plays to his strengths.

Now Pigott, Hunt and Mooney, all capable players have failed to score in four games this season.

I applaud Brown for what he did last season but he REALLY hates goals. How are strikers meant to score when they are frequently the only players anywhere near the penalty area?

Whoever he brings in, it'll make no difference. They will struggle to score.

I get what you are saying and I agree with it up to a point, but the bit about really hating goals..................you don't REALLY mean that do you?

It is rather mad regarding the lack of goals !

Imagine if a match started at 4pm and finished at 10pm and we had managed just one goal with that goal being classy or damn lucky,we would leave the ground absolutely shell shocked and of course knackered.

Phil's mindset is IMO from another era and has no place in the modern game,It seems as though he is playing chess with his players, why is he so afraid of going guns blazing.

He has signed these guys and ultimately will destroy them.

I do actually agree with some of that (mrsblue talking a little bit of sense, shocker). Phil Brown is far too defensive. At the end of the season we put that great run together to easily finish in the play-offs, when it was looking iffy at one stage. We needed points on the board, so we had to attack. That's when Southend are at their best. Even in the play-off final, we only looked good once going a goal behind, and had to attack. I really am tired of all this one up front nonsense. It won't get us promotion, and is painfully boring and frustrating to watch.

I don't think the issue this season is the mindset of the manager, I think the issue is that the manager has so many good midfielders that he doesn't know yet how to get the most out of them. To me last night was all about trying to squeeze as many talented midfielders into the team as possible, and even then he couldn't find room for Wordsworth or Payne.

We've a bunch of creative midfielders and we've three strikers all with a lot of ability. Brown needs to find a way to get the most out of both.

Maybe we could apply to the FL to field 13 players at the start of each match Beefy. Our grounds for doing so would be that we are freshly promoted and we need a bit of help getting going. That sounds like a plan to me.

lets face it , Brown is trying to be Jose Mourinho ...... he's got the suarve suntanned looks , grey hair , unfaltering confidence, loves the media attention , and loves a very defensive style of play.

However , Jose has Hazard, Costa & Terry ... Phil has Deegan, Mooney & Bolger

Being fair,

Phil has had well over 100 games,if he is still searching for that magic formula, how many more games does he need until he actually discovers it.

At least he has the sense not to verbally abuse Ben Clarkson.

May not be PB's mindset as such but I'm sure it's a reflection of where his strengths as a coach lie.
No question he can set up his team to defend strongly (and I've no problem at all with that) but if you start from
the base of a strong defence, you've got to also have the players and the tactics to score at the other end.

So, the midfield have to break quickly and support the strikers when we have possession and you need to be
dangerous at set-pieces.

For example, I (like many others have mentioned) cannot see why we get next to no goals from Leonard's throws.
Needs some creative thinking about how to use this, rather than just chucking it in the box and hoping for the best.

No, my tongue was in cheek. It just seems that way.

As I say, I am not a Brown hater and applaud his achievements so far. I just wish I didn't have to lean back and put my feet on the seat in front of me every time we go forward, because I know it will come to nothing.

It's early days and we've been extra cautious because we are feeling our way in. Hopefully he will get the formula right.

And if we were scoring freely and the crowd increased, then the bum on the seat in front of you would be very upset if you put your feet on his/her shoulders:smiles:

Bring in a classy centre half on loan and get a decent pacey striker in who actually scores goals and can trouble a defense

We also need some goals from our central defenders from corners. Last year we only managed 1 that I recall. Not good enough.
Coughlan needs to work on this with our remaining fit centre half's or put the boots on again :winking:

The key I feel is to get the linkup between the defence midfield and 2 strikers which recognises each groups strengths and abilities and puts us in good positions to score, easy innit

Paul Clark was spot on last night. He said Leonard throws them high in a loop, which is too easy for the defenders. He said he needs to throw the ball flat with pace, like all the best long throw specialists.

Anyone thought that it may be a goalkeeper or even Thompson?

Personally I would like it to be Akinfenwa or similar, we need a player up front who will frighten the cr@p out of the opposing defense - something we are sadly lacking with our forwards who have lightweight non threatening physiques and lack arrogance!

We never scored from Leonard's throw-ins under Sturrock either, and if anyone would know how to set-up such a route one tactic it was him.

Maybe Leonard just isn't very good at them.

Do you remember Dave Challinor's long throws for Tranmere and Stockport? They were deadly, delivered low and with pace over a vast distance. Scared the hell out of defences and resulted in many goals. Can someone buy Lenny a video of Challinor's greatest hits?

I cannot believe that either Lenny, his team mates or the management are so thick they have not twigged the futility of his long throws. It is total incompetence to persist in this manner and says a lot about the way the players are sent out onto the pitch.

Sturrock used to use the same tactic so 2 incompetent managers I guess.
