North Korea

The other day, admiring the pictures taken during our recent trip to rural North Korea with my new DLSR camera, the honest simplicity of the locals' existence got me thinking. In an age of rampant consumerism and on-demand television, can we really be surprised that the new generation would rather listen to hip hop than appreciate the subversive nature of the works of Arnold Schoenberg? It's time for the working class to fight back!

I see what you've done there.

But it's not is it? Kim Jong Un is seen as a living god, so they've just replaced one deity for another.

No. They first became an atheist state, and only later developed the personality cult. Organised religion is still very much banned, and the country is riddled with concentration camps and starving peasants.

I am constantly being told by atheists that all the world's ills stem from religion, and getting rid of religion would make the world a much better place. Sadly every time a country has banned religion, what has then happened has somewhat undermined the argument - Cambodia (killing fields) China (Cultural Revolution and mass starvation) Russia (Stalin and the Gulags).....

I think what causes the worlds ills is people's innate selfishness and greed, and removing religion clearly doesn't remove that - but it does seem to remove some checks and balances. You can point out, justifiably, that a lot of bad things have been done in the name of religion, and you would be right, but the key point there is "in the name of", and at the root of most of those are greedy selfish people looking for money or power or both. Overall, the evidence that religion is always a bad thing and we would be better off without it simply isn't there. Show me an evil believer, and I will match you with someone who has, because of his faith, made this world a better place. It isn't just black and white.

Much underrated band.
