My father-in-law's PC has started to boot (win 2000) into windows, but before the desktop loads, it opens a DOS screen with a Format command.

Never, ever seen this... if you close the window, the PC hangs. Sounds like a virus, but dont know how to remove it (safe mode does the same).

Anyone have any ideas apart from rebuilding it?

Cheers, Paul

Boot up from your anti virus rescue or saftey disk (what ever its called !)

Or make one from another pc (uninfected !).

It does sounds like a virus , but not one ive come across .
(or some wags created a script and put it in the startup section of windows . Mind you its odd that the format commands not running ? I would have thought a virus wouldnt give you choice and would just run , leaving you to watch as it deletes your hard drive
