Could be totally wrong here as not my era but was Eddie Fermani not a forward?

Eddie Firmani was of course a forward when he played for Charlton, Sampdoria, Genoa, Inter Milan and Italy. (He is the only player to have scored over 100 League goals in both England and Italy.) He also played centre forward for us but he did fill in at centre half about half a dozen times when Eddie May was unavailable. But goalkeeper, never!

Ian McKechnie ?

McKechnie was only 23 when he joined us from Arsenal (who'd originally signed him as a left winger - unlikely as that may seem given his somewhat portly physique).

Memorable moment when he struck a penalty very hard against the post and had to scamper furiously back to his goal. He didn't take another penalty for us after that. Some 5 or more years later, he made history by being the first keeper to concede a goal in a competitive penalty shoot out (scored by George Best) and the first player to save a penalty in a shoot out (from Denis Law). He was also the first goalkeeper to take a kick in a shoot out, and the first player to miss a deciding kick.

Im trying to think of the goalkeeper Southend signed way back when, it was after Harry Threadgold was pensioned off, im thinking Eddie Fermani, short in stature old in years , ran on to the pitch with a walking stick under his arms ,:omg::smile:

The goalkeeper who replaced Harry Threadgold was Peter Goy.

This post is for Harry
Chris Ramsey. ..he played in a cup final y'know
Trevor Whymark
Kevin "dead on arrival" O'callaghan
Frank Lampard
Neville Southall
Ricketts
And the winner is...TONY CURRIE

The trouble is that Currie never actually played... he (allegedly) got injured in the warm up to a game and never featured after that.

Personally I feel it was all a bit of a publicity stunt.

One of my first ever games as a kid was when Frank Lampard was playing. I remember him falling over when running up to take a free kick about 20 yards from goal. The ball didn't even reach the wall !!

Didn't Shane Westley make a brief return several years after his first spell....?

For the goalkeeper you're not thinking Norman Uprichard!! International for Northern Ireland but totally a waste of space

Unlikely. He only played a dozen or so games and left long before Harry Threadgold finally retired giving up the unequal struggle between injury damaged eyesight and floodlit football.

Another vote for Lampard Sr.

Calls for Derek Spence are a bit harsh. Calls for Rob Newman are a bit harsh but calls for Spinner defy belief. Unless I've got the measurement wrong each of these more than held their own in the era they played.

Now Adam Barrett, he was past it or was that a past tit ?
