Memory Lane Roots Hall during WW2

It's really nice to see this photo, thanks for sharing.
The Southend Gas company wanted to build a gas holder on the land. Large deposits of sand was found so it became a sand quarry instead before becoming a dumping ground. The sand quarry created a nice shape for a new football ground to be built for Southend United.

An old photo on page 11 of the book "Images of Sport - Southend United Football Club - Compiled by Peter Miles and Dave Goody" shows the main entrance to the first Roots Hall ground (1906) as being off West Street. The book says the photo was taken "from the junction of Victoria Avenue and West Street, looking north" but the actual location (using Google street view) was on West Street near what is now the junction of Roots Hall Drive. The old houses in the picture are still there.

So, the original Roots Hall main entrance was behind the South Bank, approximately where the bunch of trees are as West Street approaches the top left of Cricko’s photo.

It's difficult to see where the first "Roots Hall Field" pitch (1906) could have sat other than on the plot space of the current pitch. I’ve read somewhere that it wasn’t a complete match. So perhaps the old car park behind the South bank was once part of the first Roots Hall pitch.
