The Iron Trust is calling on supporters to throw their weight behind Scunthorpe United’s Save Our Steel day on Saturday – including taking part in a show of support during the match against Southend.

The Shrimpers Trust are urging all those travelling to join in with this show of support. Further details can be found on the Iron Trust's website here.

I can't be there but please hold up a light for me - they have my support - and I'm totally apolitical

Can someone please explain to me why steel businesses are seen by some as government-sponsored employment programmes rather than being part of an industry where companies sink or swim dependent upon their success?

Well if we can bail out the banks who brought the world to its knees by their greed than maybe we could spare a few billion for the people who actually make something of use.

Because every advanced economy needs its own independent steel industry.

Whatever your politics, a lot of people are going to lose their jobs and it's nice to show a bit of solidarity with your fellow man/woman every now and then.

I still carry a scar or two from Orgreave 1984. We lost then and steel will lose now. There is no room for sentimentalism, heritage or community in this greed driven corporate bandwagon. We are being driven into a service industry nation that cannot stand on its own two feet without a dependency on huge imports.

I wish the steel workers luck but in my humble opinion they should be looking at alternative ways of earning a crust because this country will do nothing to help them.

Sadly you're right. All be different if they wore the right school tie and just got caught gambling billions of public money in the world casino of sub-prime mortgages and hedge funds.

It's a real shame that some of the posts got deleted, but I completely understand why as it was off topic and turning into something that was more political than Southend Utd related, which is what this forum is all about.

However I woud like to say that if you believe in it, please donate, or at least, to those that attend, light up your phones at the start of the 2nd half, after all it's a simple gesture that can only be for a good cause to help them. And I can only hope that one day,the favour is returned by other way fans one day that visit us, when we have a cause that needs highlighting to the rest of the football community.

In the mean time.. Bring on Saturday!!

It seems to me we can have any opinion on the spectrum on this subject, but there is no harm at all in showing personal solidarity with those whose livelihoods are under threat of painful change. Spoken as the Tory-est of Tory voters

It's quite interesting if you look at Scunthorpe on the satellite view on Google Maps. The steelworks is so big it's almost the same size as the town itself. You can see just by looking that closing it will hit the town massively. We just don't have anything near the same size in terms of a dominant employer in Southend so we can't really comprehend what the impact must be like.

What, work 16hrs a day at the barrel of a gun or starve to death? Didn't think you'd b backing communist China.

I'm not backing them. I'm backing capitalism and competition. We should be able to make superior products that would command a higher price than mass produced commie crap. If we can't, then we shouldn't bother.
