When is Enough, Enough?

The Shrimpers Trust was formed with the purpose 'To help, not hinder' and subsequently 'Supporting Southend United'. This means acting in the best interests of the club, not supporting Ron Martin (or any future chairman) at all costs.

Like all fans of OUR club, we are upset, angry and fed up with the decline of the football club both on and off the field.

Who is to blame? The performances on the pitch have been nothing short of embarrassing recently, but this is not unique to this season, this group of players or this management team. There is clearly a deep rooted issue at OUR club which cannot be ignored. Perhaps the council should also shoulder some blame for allowing the stadium fiasco to continue for so long. Is the stadium and Ron's pot of gold ever going to materialise or are we being led down the garden path? It seems Ron Martin is at the helm of OUR club whether we like it or not, but it is also apparent that he is incapable of leading us out of this situation with the current structure at the football club. We do not believe that Ron Martin has led us to where we are now intentionally, but we are here and action is urgently needed.

We strongly condemn Ron Martin's actions at Solihull Moors yesterday, they were ill advised and dangerous in a very hostile environment, and we are thankful that our amazing support were restrained from escalating the situation to one of violence. The actions taken by Mr Martin continued to diminish our image as a football club and we were quite frankly embarrassed.

When is enough, enough? For some people this was many years ago, for some groups this was our elimination from the Football League, for some it is now! We are not going to allow OUR club to be destroyed and sit and watch its seemingly inevitable relegation to the Conference South or even worse, our complete extinction.

We provided the means for the monthly Zoom calls, for all supporters groups, to improve the communication and transparency between the supporter groups, the fans and the football club. These are not Trust meetings, they are supporters group meetings that we are pleased to attend, represent our members and ask questions submitted to us. We acknowledge that there are times where the questions are avoided or deflected, but continue with the view that despite the obvious faults, they are a much needed communication channel between all parties and have led to some positive change including the implementation of a CEO (who clearly has his work cut out despite his desire to make an impact at the club). The next Supporters group meeting is due to take place this Thursday 7th October. Please let us know if you have any questions you would like us to ask.

The Save Our Southend group recently called for an emergency supporters group meeting which took place on Monday 27th September without the football club in attendance. The discussions were very productive with many suggestions and ideas on the table. The group agreed to publicise a poll calling for a vote of no confidence in the club chairman which we would encourage all Southend United fans to contribute to, to show the level of support for the Chairman of our football club. Coming very soon! We will act accordingly with the appropriate mandate from the fans.

It is clear that there is no magic solution. If there was, then we, or someone else, would have enacted it by now. We can all demand change, but for change to happen there has to be a viable way forward to put in place. In the absence of any plan for change of ownership it is clear however that the current owner must listen to our voices and put in place solutions and procedures to address a) the immediate fortunes of the club on the pitch, b) the proper running of the club on a day-to-day basis, and c) the secure long-term future of the club with or without the new ground. Whilst all of these aims are not independent, we firmly believe that they are ordered correctly in terms of priority. It seems to us that Ron Martin has focused on the new stadium at the expense of everything else and that must change otherwise there will not be a club to be in a new ground. He also needs to follow up on his promises – in the last zoom call he undertook to respond quickly regarding ideas for giving the club tangible security in the new ground but to date we have not received any response despite chasing him.

We will be having our monthly board meeting tomorrow evening where we will have our own continued discussion on contingency planning and suggested way forward. We are not a closed shop and would be very interested in the views or questions you have. We will answer every question that is put to us. We are a group of unpaid volunteers but most importantly supporters who have the best intentions of OUR club at heart and will continue to dedicate our time to help the future of the football club. We are accountable to YOU and value your thoughts and contributions, they are wanted and needed.

In our time of desperation and need, we must have an absolutely united fan base and will be working closely with other supporters groups to ensure this is achieved.

Strong words but what strength do we supporters have? None. Ron holds all the cards. You say he has chased the Fossetts dream at the expense of our club security but fans need to recognise if we stay put at RH, our days are numbered anyway. His dream of a new stadium should be our dream too. It is our only hope of longevity.

Beating the drum and shouting all manner of rallying cries is all well and good, but, when/if the fans respond to a call to arms, what exactly are they going to do? Protest? Pointles. Boycott? Counter intuitive. Lobby the council? They have their agenda mapped out and we won't change their hedonism or ineptitude.

We can only bark like a toothless dog. Like it or lump it. Ron has control and we can only hope, pray if you like, that he comes good with his promises.

I disagree. He has given no concrete evidence of how we would be a sustainable club even if the the stadium is built. And why could RootsHall not be improved, if the surrounding areas and parts of the existing stadium were converted to flats etc ?

RH is close to being fit for demolition only. The cost of repairs and refurbishment is prohibitive against possible future returns because of the lack of capacity. I will be sad to see RH go but I accept it as a price to pay for sustainability. The new stadium will afford us the opportunity to realise some of our aspirations as a club. There is no such thing as treading water, only sink or swim.

The alternative is to re-develop Roots Halls and offer the full Fossetts Farm site to the council, giving them more homes etc.

And there in lies the problem. We have as fans supported this club through thick and thin whilst RM has promised us the Golden Goose is but a stones throw away. Every year we hear the stadium is just around the corner and the Messiah will save us all as we walk into the promised land of FF. I don't care If RM in your opinion holds all the cards whilst we as PB put it head towards oblivion, The Trust are correct, when is enough enough. You can by all means sit there like a toothless dog and watch from the sidelines as we sink further into the mire, others like myself will not.

As far as The Zone and our members are concerned we will back The Trust 100% in any endeavours that are backed by the majority and we could not rightly call ourselves fans of our club If we did not. RM has got off lightly for far to long with a few words, false promises and bull****. It's time it was stopped.

SUFC is us the fans not Ron Martin, it was long before he turned up and hopefully will still be long after he has gone.

The time to act is NOW before it is to late.

Sorry but it al sounds like bluster. You still have not said one thing , one impactful thing, that we can do. We do not have leverage. We do not have any way of damaging Ron's plans. If we do then tell me what but please don't say protest or boycott. They will serve no other purpose than we fuel to the fire of futility. If I thought for one minute I could make a difference, I would be there with bells on but my head rules my heart in these matters.

Are we not minded to give Chief Exec Tom Lawrence more time?

Southend United were 9th in L1 in Jan 2019, having missed the playoffs by a point the previous season. We’ve just lost 3-2 at home to previously pointless Aldershot in the NL. We’ve fallen 47 places in just over 2.5 years. And we’re still falling.

Reap. Sow.

Help/advice offered but minority of support felt that getting in the latest managerial saviour would solve everything.

Inept ownership + elevations to positions within based on zero credibility or ability allowed to work unchallenged.

A festering cancer of a club.

What happened to the Chief Exec you recommended? Saw the announcement that he’d joined, but nothing since?

He's been excellent at adding a structure to the club, working his nuts off and making sure the club business is conducted properly. But if you contact him, he'll more than likely show you. It's called transparency. As he's a lawyer you can count on it.

I think for 1 a vote of no confidence in RM by the fans as The Trust have said is a very good starting point. Make no mistake fans do have powers as other clubs have shown before. Admittedly it's not going to be easy but we cannot just sit here and watch our demise any longer. I am also confident they many others will come forward with suggestions.

Everything has to have a beginning This hopefully is it

Tell you what, why not do nothing. It's worked a dream so far eh?

Whilst we know that this a pretty much a one man operation, are the rest of the board exempt from criticisms?

Whilst they may be pretty impotent, I am disappointed that not one of them has made any form of public statement ??

Out of interest from someone uneducated on the process. What is the best case outcome of a vote of no confidence?

Yes, what does this vote of no confidence actually do?

On the surface it just sounds like a very English “We’ve written a letter of complaint!”.

It states that the fans no longer have confidence in RM as chairman/owner and he is not fit for purpose anymore and should no longer hold that position. It has no power as such as we are not board members but will create full on pressure and is a great starting point.

We have had no confidence in RM for years and he knows it.

I think you are wrong. I believe RM thinks as his Ego dictates. He thinks he does no wrong and SUFC is him not us and the majority of fans think so to.

Yesterday's fiasco showed how he thinks as did the times he walked about the pitch taking adoration from fans.

He suffers from NPD.

Well said the trust, this is what’s needed, we will always have a club at some level with or without Ron, the trust have always supported this club no matter what, without them we wouldnt have half the club we have now and we certainly wouldn’t have such a good youth set up without them, that’s why I’m a life member along with many others, I’ll back them all the way and which ever way they decide to go:Clap::Thumbs up:

I do think the whole stadium thing has been a big part of our demise one way or another. We’re constantly told it’s the key to unlocking our potential, but in the meantime it’s been assumed we’ll carry on knocking around leagues 1 & 2 until the goose finally lays the golden egg. Except we haven’t. RM took his eye off the ball and suddenly we’re NL strugglers. I do think the council also have a lot to answer for, it’s like they’re scared to make a decision. Every time we get close, they find another reason to delay. It’s time the town and it’s council decided whether they want a professional club or not. We need a decision on the stadium development one way or another, so we know where we stand and can plan the future with some certainty. If it goes ahead RM gets his chance to prove his words were true. If it gets turned down, RM should do the decent thing and sell up to the best offer, let someone else have a go.
