Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-2 Wycombe Wanderers

Agreed, Phillips is the only Southend player I've ever seen contain Akinfenwa. Too many get dragged in to a battle of trying to beat him in the air. Let him win the header or bring it in to his body because he's going to do that anyway. Just don't let him turn because that's what he can't do because he's built like a truck

I'd be interested to see what his contract situation is like at Wycombe as despite his age I would still have him here in a heartbeat next season (providing it's League Two)

It was noticeable that Akinfenwa went to Elvis on the back post in the first half from a free kick. Alarm bells rang but i expected it to be sorted at half time.

His second goal we crowded him out with numbers from the kick but he switched sides for the second delivery. Despite having Lennon, Kiernan, Dieng and White still loitering to deep in our box not one of them took any responsibility and went with the Beast.

Elvis was left with a miss match and as i have seen before, The beast can guide a good header into the right areas. Unlike Dieng who who could have easily held a yard in the first half and steered his header to an unmarked Cox.

I said the same thing re the second goal, and I am guessing most of us thought the same thing. It wasn’t a fast move, we had loads of time to sort ourselves out and we end up with Elvis marking afinfenwa. Every game we give away at least one goal from switching off/ stupid mistake/ not taking responsibility/ lack of communication/lack of commitment or a combination of the above. No surprise a simple error gave the beast an opportunity that he takes very well
