Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 4-1 Aldershot Town

Here's my analysis of Saturday's victory:
🔹 Why Aldershot were so dangerous in the first-half
🔹 How Jack Wood's introduction made us stronger in attack and defence, and gave us more control

My eyes were also failing me on Saturday. Could have sworn their goalie was called 'Can't Stoppershott'

I thought he sounded like a dodgy Flemish beer.......The type your try once because the pokey little Belgian bar hasn't got any Stella.

Again some extremely in depth analysis of the game which gets overlooked by the majority including myself , my question would be whether Maher will adopt this second half formation when we are 11 v 11 in future games .

Id say focusing on +63% possession with teams playing a high press against us will create space and gaps in the later stages of the game where players like Bridge and Wood can be effective
Im glad we was brave in our tactics and it paid off for us , its interesting that you mention our 3 in the middle who are very good in phase one possession and retain the ball well , do you buy into the theory that we need a breaker in the middle to compliment 2 ball players or do you think we continue with the philosophy of having players intelligent and comfortable to continually try and beat the press to move up the pitch in that manner ?

We do now seem to have a willing runner up top who could capitalize when teams press us with balls played a bit more direct into his path/channels , especially away from home

Thank you!

I think that we could see Jack Wood used in this role going forwards, in matches where we need more creativity from the right, and perhaps don’t need three physical midfielders if sides are sitting deeper. I’m not sure we’d start a match like it, but it makes us more tactically flexible.

However, it makes more sense to use him in this role whilst GSM in injured. He’d hold the width on the right-side when we’re in-possession, meaning Demetriou could play slightly deeper. This would mean that Demetriou wouldn’t have to attack in the last line and defend in the back five, which is difficult for him due to his age and lack of athleticism compared to GSM. If GSM were playing, we’d want him further forwards so that he can get in the penalty area on the end of crosses from our left-side.

Regarding the second point, I don’t think we need another defensive midfielder. Miley is the perfect fit for this role, and as he’s usually available, we don’t need another specialist #6, and Husin/Morton give us enough cover here.

However, having Cardwell (and now Waldron) not only gives us a target to aim for if we had to play long passes over opposition presses. They can also run in-behind for us to play beyond defences, like you say, which is very useful.

Don’t know if this has been posted here yet, but it’s a decent blog and the author was at the match https://offtheline599656488.wordpre...ch-report-southend-united-4-1-aldershot-town/
An interesting and informative match report from an unbiased observer. Contrary to some player feedback from the home crowd, this bloke reckoned Cav Miley had a very good game holding the Blues together. I agree with the comment completely, but it is interesting how there can be so many contrasting opinions on the same player.
