An old flatmate of mine's uncle used to be president of Torquay United. (This was back in 1999). She was well known even then for being overly familiar with the Torquay squad. Rumours of promised trysts with players when the team won etc.

If this is still the case, it would explain Torquay's woeful season.
 
The worst thing about the whole stunt was it exemplified just how completely out of touch the show has become with actual football supporters. What they thought would be a quirky gesture that'd be well received by football fans was actually quite a dismissive PR stunt, that painted the JPT as a tournament that just doesn't matter to anyone. Of course that isn't the case, it's a prestigious occasion for the supporters of this club, but those at Soccer AM, so self-involved and convinced of their own importance (just see the entry in Lovejoy's horribly self-indulgent "autobiography" about worrying about not being able to impact on football anymore after leaving Soccer AM), completely misjudged it. Probably the precise reason why the show is now almost exclusively watched by cretins and ****wits, and why it's struggling.
