So, congratulations to Chelsea, winners of the FA Cup 2009. But let it not be forgotten the contribution that Southend made to this season's competition, mentioned a few times today as we were in commentary on TV and on radio.

We proved the toughest competition that Chelsea faced in the Cup this year, because:

a. We were the only team to take them to a replay

b. We were the only team to score two goals against them

c. We held the lead against them for the longest time. Chelsea had to come back from being a goal down in four of their seven matches in the Cup this year, but they were behind to us for the longest.

Length of time between Chelsea going a goal down and them equalising:

Southend - 29 minutes
Watford - 6 minutes
Arsenal - 15 minutes
Everton - 20 minutes

Chelsea may have their name on the Cup, but we played our part!

UP THE SHRIMPERS!

Worthy winners on the day.

And the 1-1 draw will be up there of great games for years to come.

Is this the 1st time Southend have ever been knocked out by the eventual winners of the FA Cup? Can't think of any other occasions.

The last occasion we were knocked out by the eventual winners was back in 1956, when Manchester City beat us 1-0 in the 4th Round at Roots Hall, on their way to beating Birmingham City in the Final at Wembley.

By all accounts it was quite a match, noted for the awful state of the pitch due to torrential rain and an outstanding performance by City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann. He later described it in fact as "possibly the finest performance" of his career. He then went on to become well-known for playing on in that year's Final having broken his neck during the match.

Manchester City's Welsh International Roy Paul said after the game at the Hall: "This was the toughest match so far for me. City will never have a tougher game either in Cup or League. These Southend boys gave everything they had in the second half and then kept coming."

Sounds just like this year against Chelsea!

;)

We should be proud, the team chelsea played against us was the same as the one in the final but it was malouda (diving idiot) instead of cole (injured because he dived hahaha). And we were the only ones who gave them a fight. Took them to a replay and went ahead at our place.
