"There's no point in having a new stadium if you don't have a good team"

And if you look back at this board at the same time of the year for the last 2 seasons, you'll see exactly the same things posted, and look where we've ended up.....

In the play offs and just outside. But I strongly suspect(and so I believe do many others)that'll we'll be flirting with relegation rather than the playoffs this time round.

It's been proven ever since Tilly took over that we are invariably much better after Xmas than before. Also factor in M'voto coming back, and us finally (hopefully) having a settled back 4, and we'll only be going one way in the table, and it's not down....

Well last season turned after signing Robinson and Dervite, but by large we have the same first 11 as the last 2 seasons.

Plus Sawyer, who was one of the best players we had last year, and Clarke at CB.

These 4 players made a massive difference. DD and PC made the defence look rock solid, TR was a very decent player up top, and Sawyer was capable of producing top quality football.

We don't have that atm.

Also, 2 seasons ago we had Mulgrew, Bailey and Gower. All of which would walk into our current 1st team

Sawyer wasn't here in the second half of the season!

Of course I guess thats kinda the point we are only a couple of players away from being a good side in this division!

True dat, but unfortunately we're also not far off (dare i say we're already there?) being a team fighting for survival

Indeed, tbh I think its going to be a struggle especially with the away games we have coming up! I've said it before but our home form will be pivotal.

I feel, to be safe, we need 20-24 points. From our remaining home games, we SHOULD be able to pick those points up quite comfortably, but then again, as we know with Southend, nothing's every simple or easy.

Wycombe W
Swindon D
Tranmere W
Charlton L
Exeter W
Walsall D
Carlisle W
Yeovil W
Brentford D
Brighton W
Stockport W

Didn't actually realise we are playing virtually all the teams below us at the moment!

our away games don't look so good -

Millwall
Col U
Mk Dons
Norwich
Hartlepool
Bristol R
Leeds
Oldham
Southampton

err....... point(s) possible at Millwall, H'pool, Brizzle and Oldham? (and dare i say it Col U ;))

Can't see us getting too many points out of that lot!

The new stadium will help, but wont grantee future success.

The new stadium, will attract better players because of the better facilities. The new stadium will generate additional revenue making it possible for us to make money 24/7 via hotels, casinos, shops, conference facilities, the potential to stage concerts etc etc.

Its obvious money is tied up with the new stadium, and to release that to Tilson to sign new players would be madness. The old break even figure was 8,000, now its Championship football in a new stadium. I don't think we will be in the Championship when FF rolls around, but we will be able to assemble a promotion winning side.

As a squad, we are only a few players off being a play-off side, just look at the introduction of Dervite and Robsinon last season, and Barnard and Mulgrew (plus others) the season before.

Having supported SUFC since the early 60's and only having ever seen the club in Division 2/the Championship for 7 seasons during that time personally I'd be quite happy if we continued playing our football in Divisions 1 or 2.
As long as- the club was financially secure and the owner(s) had the best interest of the football club at heart-that is.

That view is consistent with your scepticism about need for new stadium so I can see where you are coming from.
It's those who don't want a new stadium yet hit the panic button whenever we slip into the bottom half of league one and demand money be thrown around in the transfer market that I don't understand.
It's as though the prospect of playing in league two is something they think Southend should never again have to contemplate.

Ah, I thought the revenue stream issue would be mentioned.FWIW Espanyol have made a great fuss about this too.To be fair there are restaurants, bars, meeting and function rooms at Espanyol's new stadium to which the club has the sole right of exploitation(unlike FF I believe). There is also talk of events being held there eg pop concerts etc which obviously the club would benefit from.Yet despite the showpiece nature of the excellent new stadium-it's widely tipped here to be the venue for the UEFA Cup Final in 20011 and was recently the centre chosen for an important FIFA meeting-the point remains that the stadium has been developed at the expense of the team.
This is exactly the situation that SUFC are in now and are likely to be in the forseable future IMO.

I guess you could call them visionaries, but that seems like one hell of a long term investment to me :)
