i did hear he had a trust fund from his early days ...

"He got the sack for drugs....taking them and having them with him.....MDMA, coke, weed he wasn't fussy."

oh ... possibly why he was popular with some ..

I thought he was very good at the front post defending corners - and never got riled up when he got battered (every game) - not a touch on Sol Campbell though ..

I was fairly ambivalent when I asked the question, but after listening to the debate from both sides, I now edge towards the side that says it would be a bad decision to bring him back.

I was a little bit gutted that Chris Powell didn’t get a chance to manage him as I think he could’ve turned him around. He may have also helped out and Powell could still be our manager. But we will never know!!
There was a q and a with Ron and CP, my memory is a bit hazy but CP said he wouldn't have gone anywhere near ranger as a player or something along those lines. @rigsby was there not sure if he remembers exactly what he said?

I don't think Ron would ever consider it tbh.

Nile is a very likeable guy when you meet him, he just hasn't grown up. I really do hope he gets a chance and takes it. I think he needs a season in non league, at a serious club, no Romford. Playing for a pittance and proving himself. It's the only way in my eyes. He can't see isthmian level as below him anymore, he might think it but he has to prove that he has something to give the football league

I would agree with those posters who say Nile should perhaps drop to non league or something, to prove he’s serious about playing the game. He’s popular amongst some of our fan base but he’s not played in ages and I think at this pivotal moment we need to steer away from the past and build a future with a young, ambitious manager and team.

He wouldn’t have much of a choice if he was still here.

Yes those were two things he did well. so credit where its due but he couldn't be trusted at the back post, look at Sheffield U at home first goal. He also saved his violence until after midnight.....Or for women.

Yes cant remember his exact words. Ferdinand, CP and Sol weren't interested so why people think Fagin could or would deal with him just because he is black is bizarre.

Apologies if it's been mentioned elsewhere, but the scam to send him down involved an old lady.
I know morals in football have gone to hell in a handcart, but surely this is damn sight worse than most footballer crimes?

This is not the first time that his scam has been mentioned in this thread and others, and not in a forgiving way either, so thankfully morals are not completely dead in the eyes of Southend fans.

Hmm I think Luke McCormick, Lee Hughes and Adam Johnson’s crimes are far worse!

Wouldn’t have thought of it.
What more does he have to do, to show he has zero professionalism.
Would love nothing more than to see a good will story, of him becoming something of what he should’ve been, knocking in a couple of dozen for us, in an unbeaten season.
But that ain’t going to happen.
I feel that the character of some players, needs more consideration, as it can be a real liability.
Having a potential loose cannon waiting to go off, does impact a squad, as we be seen before.
I think the team has got enough challenges.

Nile Ranger. Newcastle.
“I turned up late for training more than once after developing a taste for midweek nights out, and was also spending far too much free time in casinos.

“I gambled £30,000 in a two-month period and had to borrow £70,000 from Hatem Ben Arfa, Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini to pay my debts. The club found out and instantly banned me from every casino in Newcastle, while Coloccini sat me down and warned me about the dangers of gambling.

“Mark Viduka was a positive influence too, often advising young players to save their money. Alan Smith was another good role model who drove a battered old car despite his big earnings. I still didn’t listen.”

And that last sentence says it all....''I still didn't listen.''
He seems to have an addictive personality. When he went back to Wood Green and later Tottenham, it was drink, drugs and all night parties, the knock on effect being late for everything. Stealing the TV, damaging the property, and stealing part of the kitchen work surface before he left his place here, shows another dark side to him, along with all previous crimes and arrests. There were many at Southend that tried to steer him away from all the outside influences. Phil Brown tried really hard. And if you asked Nile now about how it all went wrong at Southend and his football career in general, he would probably say many people tried to help him......''But I still didn't listen.''
