The way I see it is that, like most things in life, if someone isn't performing very well and you shout them down/abuse them, it isn't going to help one bit. All you will achieve is lowering the confidence of the individual, them losing respect for you, even eventually severely disliking being anywhere near you. What these players need is encouragement. If they do something wrong they shouldn't be abused for it, but rather encouraged to keep trying, let them know that we are supporting them and not just waiting for them to slip up just for an opportunity to lay into them. People surely can't think that calling someone a useless **** is going to help them perform better!?
