Efe Sodje was signed in the January transfer window, well before deadline day. He was initially signed on loan, on Friday 6 January 2006, to enable him to play at Oldham the following day, and then the deal was made permanent at the start of the next week.

Was there even a transfer deadline back in Whymark's day?

Deadline day in those days was around the 3rd week of March which it still is, but nowadays for loan deals.

this has pretty much turned into a 'who is the best/worst signing ever' thread, since most peoples entires seem to be factually inaccurate and not related to deadline day!

I think he came on as a sub at home to Port Vale, immediately skied a shot from 40 yards into the South Bank flats and that was about it for Paynter.

He had a good game (half?) against Cardiff at home which was the same game he got injured, hit the post and had a goal disallowed. That was pretty much the last time we saw him.

Did Paynter earn himself a million pounds move after leaving us?

He scored a lot of goals for Swindon and went to Leeds. Can't remember if that was a Bosman or they payed a mil for him.

I'm pretty sure the March transfer deadline day was introduced in the late 80s, so after Trevor Whymark's time. I tried looking for evidence to confirm this earlier but couldn't find any. I managed to get as far as finding confirmation that there was a March deadline day in 1989, but wasn't able to go further back than that. I'm pretty sure though that it was introduced around 1987 or 1988.

Anyway, according to sufcdb, Trevor Whymark was signed in January 1984, so definitely not a deadline day deal! :tease:

The signing of Matt Paterson with Barnard going the other way that was in January 2010.

Wasn't Damien Scannell a January signing or did he join beginning of season

Could possibly include 1 of the Sawyer loan extensions

Was Hal Robson Kanu Janusry?
