Cover versions that will divide opinion

I'm struggling to get this, the thread was about covers which DIVIDE opinion, are you saying this absolute classic is one of those?

but surely every single song will divide opinion. If we all thought that something was brilliant it would've been the greatest selling record of all time.

I've said it's a classic, in that it is probably the song that epitomises Madness, though I wouldn't say it's their greatest.

Besides, Rolf Harris? Stairway to heaven? Surely that can't divide opinion? lol :O

Yeah, Madness' version is just as good as Labi Siffre's.

Mc(ferking)Fly should be rounded up and stoned with copies of Setting Sons for this absolute travesty of covering That's Entertainment - not when you're singing it you talentless ugly, lisping motherferkers!

Weller, Foxton and Buckler (the Holy Trinity) show them HOW it was done that brought a generation to fall at their feet at their sheer brilliance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wT7xvMi6pzE

Why such vitriol?

Sure, I much prefer the original. However what's wrong with a young pop band covering a classic and bringing it to a new audience? As a result they may go on to become fans of The Jam - surely a good thing.

Many of the bands I've liked have covered or name checked their influences in interviews which has led to me finding out more and expanding my taste and music collection.

Stop being so liberal hippy. Get a job and your hair cut and stuff.

Got to confess to a bit of a soft spot for McFly, love this track

Not sure how many covers they've done actually, in the main I think they write their own stuff, and play their own instruments which is a pretty major achievement for boy bands these days!

Much as it pains me, cos he's grown up into a lovely man, I think I have a winner though

Apparently originally released by some other chap a few years previously.

I'm far from a liberal hippy, my hair is short and I (sadly) have a 'proper' job.

However I don't like musical snobbery.

Why not? McFly are nothing more than a cobbled together boyband by some record industry exec and money thrown at them until it stuck. It's this mentality that keeps "proper" bands who can make their own music get dropped after one album. The Clash, The Jam et al wouldn't survive in todays market because bands aren't given time to mature.

And as for "the kids" going out and seeking The Jam's works after hearing McFly butcher "Malice" I sincerely doubt it - they probably think that it's "their" song.

Anyway, back on track - How about, "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" originally by Soft Cell, and David Gray did a credible cover of it IMHO.

OOOH, Mk, who's rattled your cage this morning? In all fairness, I don't think McFly were put together like that and they'd been working together for some time before hitting the big time. Surely you have to give them some credit for their song writing and musical ability? Surely you have to concede that they have more credibility than Boyzone or Westlife?

McFly and Credit in the same sentence .... sorry, but that doesn't hang right somehow !!!!!

It's all relative thought isn't it, would you put them in the same musical box as Boyzone, Westlife, A1, Take That, Spice Girls, Girls Aloud, Hearsay, Atomic Kitten etc all of whom were put together specifically by back room teams, and have had a proliferation of hits from cover versions? I'm just saying that with their own songs being written and produced and playing their own instruments that they do deserve a bit of credit. FWIW I think Danny (the rockier voiced one of the two main singers) has a great voice. Or maybe that's just me and young men again!!!

Such bands have always existed - you are looking at the past through rose-tinted glasses if you think otherwise. The charts have never been full of great music from talented independant artists 'sticking it to the man'. Instead they have always been full of dross with the odd jewel shining through. Thankfully over time the dross gets forotten and we remember the great music - that's as true now as it has ever been.

Also you have to bear in mind that some of the best pop music ever made, Motown, was from manufactured groups and highly controlled artists.

No I wouldn't! On the F-Word, one of the ugly bleeders admitted he auditioned for Busted.
