I remember him saying that he'd never take a penalty for us. I've never liked left footed players taking penalties, I think it's too predictable.

Ayrshire has something of a point... In last years Premier League, only 1 (or 2) first choice penalty taker was left-footed, and that was Gareth Barry.

Body shape. they're only going to go one way.

As opposed to a right-footer?

Interesting factoid that may be, how much does that actually tell us?

It doesn't tell us whether the right-footed players (with their bodyshapes allowing them to go both ways) were actually more successful. There is also an imbalance between left and right footed players, meaning you'd expect more right-footed players to take penalties simply because they are more of them. In the context of a sample as small as 20, how much does that actually tell us?

A study of English penatly takers, undertaken in Turin in 1990, concluded that left footed penalty takers were crap :'(

Actually, in fairness to Ayrshire I have heard such a suggestion before but I could think of no practical reason why it would be the case......particularly when you consider there are probably a disproportiate amount of left footers described as 'cultured left foot' than right footers described as having a 'cultured right foot'! With cricket's line of angles being left or right handed matters, but taking a penalty, I just can't see why it would be so?

If it was a General Studies style question and I had to give an answer, I would probably waffle about left footers tending to play down the left wheras right footers play either on the right or accross the middle, and therefore the left footer tends to be striking a ball inside / infield more often than a right footer and therefore one way........ but I am just making that up and can't see it!

so your saying right footed are only going to go one way too. thats a load of rubbish and making you look like a fool

If you take the time to look at a selection of penalties right footers will stand central, left footers will stand to the right and will rarely shoot across themselves.

I have to say, if anyone said to me that Adam Barret and Edgar Davids, would someday play in the same team, I don't know what I would have said to them!

To be fair, I've never been the fan of players trying to 'trick' the goalkeeper into going the wrong way. The best penalties are the ones that are unstoppable even if the keeper does go the right way.

Ha, i like this thread. I always say when i see a left footer going to take a pen, "never trust a leftie".

Could it not be that when a right footed played takes a penalty is would generally go to the keepers left. Which given that this is more than likely the weaker side of most keepers (as they're right handed) means right footed players are more likely to score than a lefty going to a keepers 'stronger' side??

Put it this way - I'd rather have the General taking a penalty than Scrounger or TFS!!
