Fair comments 'philo' but who on this merry-go-round of managership is a likely alternative candidate and doesn't carry some sort of baggage, whilst factoring in whether they would come here anyway?

Im not that happy to see Chris P, yes I liked him when he played for us, this part is clouding a lot of the views. Great players, does not always mean great managers.

So lets forget about the days spent on the training ground with the players, tactical meetings, signings, teamtalks, back room staff.... I could go on.... as long as it unites fans.... that'll fix it!

No one said it was the only thing that matters, just that its a postive.

Not sure why its a 'worrying' assumption , but I did say it was an assumption. I thought it likely because without the nostalgia I can see why people would have less attraction to bring him in. And the fact your username has '84 in it would suggest you were born in 84 so still very young when he was here.

AS for his record, Ive made the same point above that if it wasnt Powell people wouldnt be falling over themselves as much so agree with you.

However I am still keen for him to be the man, because his record is still decent, and his reputation will give us a lift on its own.

As I asked above though, if you feel Powell's record isnt inspiring whose record would you actually be inspired by that we could bring in?

Probably means he is 84...

Well i am thrilled if it is Powell if not for any reason that it will bring a bit of joy back to going to watch our beloved team and hopefully will help heal the divisions on SZ.

Square pegs in square holes will be a good place for any new Manager to start and not naming and shaming players in public - especially the younger players who i think will now be able to kick on with their careers.

Our players should be good - let's hope that the new change (whoever comes in) helps them prove that they are good.

Dont worry, gonna be too hard to explain to assumption bit, sorry.

In terms of my age, yep, I watched Powell pretty much every week from about the age of 6 to 13. Remember it very well.

More inspiring appointments for me off the top of my head... The Cowleys OR N.Jones. Both in roles so would be a sideways move and a big payoff, so unlikely. If we’re really lucky... Grayson, McDermott, Monk (that would be WOW), Warburton... if we're truly a forward thinking club, they're all currently out of work. Thats without me looking into better options properly, but only then... and only then... after tapping up them... would I consider hiring Powell as an u23s scout on a part time 3-month contract!

'Uniting fans' has no relevance to whether or not we stay up.

Wouldn't agree there.

A passionate, positive crowd will drive the players on to give that little bit extra.

Considering the pitch is ****** and we can't change all of the playing staff, what's left? The atmosphere at RH has been dreadful for a while, there are arguments and in fighting between fans and not just on here... don't underestimate the power of the fans. We absolutely have it within our power to intimidate the opposition or terrify our own team, and the latter has been the case.

We need to get behind the team. If we are 100% behind the manager, then that's a fantastic start.

Chris Powell will have this season at least, if we go down, its all Ron Martin fault for not pulling the trigger early some will say, if we stay up Powell will be hailed a messiah and the normal stick £ 20 on promotion next season will be the topic ( That's of course if we don't go up this season)
Lovely guy had the pleasure of talking to him for an interview when running SOL and WSV forums, all ways had time to chat and answer questions, but the question will be how long before the 130 + pollster who want Chris as manager, turn on here and want instant promotions.
This has to be a two to three year plan (a) Year one stay up (b) Year two find a squad capable of mid table or play off (c) Year three Promotion, whether its bringing in youngsters in year one and two and now fully experienced

I'm sure the next manager bounce effect will take place and the crowd carried away with memories and his dazzling smile and I guess add 1000 on the next home gate, but lets look at the long term rather than short

Job one get a win and confidence boost

By the way Phil Brown thanks for the promotion and near miss last season, wish you the best in your next venture

Maybe you want to talk to some of the players.

One ex-player said that playing here you always had someone on your back or in your face from the home support. Sometimes made it a really difficult place to play, and playing away was far easier.

The last couple of weeks / months have been horrible at Roots Hall. If my workplace was like that, I'd be keeping my head down hoping not to be the one who made a mistake and got the flack this week.

One thing we know for sure, the next couple of home games are going to be a honeymoon period. The nasty atmosphere will be lifted and the players will find it easier to perform. In the very short term, that may be all we need to bag a few points and make sure we are in this league next season.

Monk?

What has he achieved?

Fair and honest thoughts and I agree on some of those.

Would we be able to afford them, though and how long would they last, before a Championship Club would come knocking for them?

Monk was someone I thought of, his managerial is in limbo after Middlesboro and Leeds, and if and its a BIG If the stadium gets he go ahead , we could be a Swansea, lower division, new stadium and I would imagine a decent budget

The question is it enough to sell him and of course how much would he command as a salary, maybe incentive bonus could be written in, whether they get paid is another question

My only worry is that man who rightly deserves legend status ends up on the receiving end of some of the nastiness, toxicity and personal abuse that Phil Brown received (and not just during this season). Anytime you change a manager, there is a risk involved. I mean, how many of us thought Tilson would be any good?As for the Cowleys. No experience at this level. No experience with big time player. IMHO a far greater risk than CP

and that's exactly why the job should be given to Phil Gridlete instead...

I’m not anti-Powell but if he gets this job its because he’s an ex player, not because he’s pulled up any trees as a manager. His appointment would also pacify the fans in the short term which is important as we have a limited time to stay in the league. I always find it strange that whenever a new manager is discussed a lot of people want an ex-player such as Powell, Barrett, or Maher for no other reason than they feel that person has some sort of association with the club. This doesn’t matter to me - plenty of managers with no association that have done a decent job for us - Sturrock and Brown are 2.

Selecting a manager is pot luck at the best of times. You can get someone who has a proven track record at this level and it does or doesn’t work out. You can get an ex pro with no managerial experience and it does (Tilson) or it doesn’t (Whelan) work out. But for my money someone who’s had a go at a couple of clubs already and pulled up no real trees, rarely turns out to be a long term success - and that’s why I’m unsure about Powell.

Rons objective may be to retain league 1 status and nothing further for the moment, in which case fine.

I feel like the only one who is struggling to be inspired by this dutty rumour.

This view combined with your user name, and the fact you are the only person to vote on the poll that RM sacked PB too early, leads me to hereby proclaim you are Phil Brown and i claim my £5 (and the free pint from the Shrewsbury game)

Phil Gridlet = ex-southend hero.
Phil Gridleté = full time french porn-star.
