And Jim Stannard (1984-87 124 apps) :
Jim Stannard, manager of Nationwide South strugglers Redbridge, insists he wants to put the Andy Woodman saga behind him and has told league rivals Thurrock: "Let the authorities deal with it now."
Stannard responded after Thurrock chief executive Tommy South hit out at Redbridge for reporting the Ship Lane side to the Essex FA for their approach to goalkeeper Woodman. Redbridge chairman Jim Chapman claimed Thurrock had acted improperly in signing Woodman two weeks ago. The Oakside outfit were left seething after discovering that the keeper had played in Thurrock's recent FA Trophy defeat against Slough Town, allegedly without their permission. Chapman lodged a complaint with the Essex FA, even though Woodman had only played once for his side.
But Stannard, preparing for his side's relegation crunch clash with Carshalton Athletic on Saturday, said: "It's all behind us. I've got no bad feelings towards Andy at all. We just want to focus on our vital relegation six pointer with Carshalton. We just want to let the authorities deal with it, and until we hear more from them, we want to get on with football matters."
South, though, maintains they DID agree a seven-day approach with Redbridge and insisted the Motormen were aware that Woodman only intended to play one game for them.
"The whole thing has just developed into a silly mess to be honest," said South. "We heard reports that Andy Woodman was looking for another club. We contacted him, telling him we were interested in signing him. He told us he was only at Redbridge for one game and that Jim Stannard and Jim Chapman both knew he was only there for that game, just to help them out. The next day we met with Andy and he signed a contract with us until the end of the season. At that point, we asked him about Redbridge. He said there was no problem and that he would talk with Stannard, whom he has known for a long time. We did not anticipate any problems and we left it to Andy to let Redbridge know the situation. The whole thing should never have got as far as it has. But Jim Stannard wouldn't release Andy until last week, which was poor on the manager's part. We've apologised for any offence we caused. But we feel Stannard over-reacted and I'm disappointed by that."
Essex FA chief executive Phil Sammons said the matter is currently ongoing. There's no date as to when the case will come up," said Sammons. "We've received Redbridge's complaint and Thurrock's statements.”
A commission will be set up to which both clubs will be called to attend.
