Brexit negotiations thread

Obviously as the 'CEO of a German company' he is one of those dreadful foreigners whose words can be dismissed as propaganda. Everything will be fine when we've pulled up the drawbridge and got our blue passports.

Talking about "dreadful foreigners" there was an article in the Grauniad earlier by Pedro Sanchez, (Spain's new socialist pm), which I didn't link to.He was the third EU leader recently to urge the UK to have a second referendum. With friends like that,as they say. :Whistling:

I wish I could share your optimism but (obviously) I don't.

I suggest you read the article.
The only people who say 'pull up the drawbridge ' are remainers who want to stir up emotions. However the longer mass immigration continues the more the drawbridge will have to be pulled up.

to be fair we won;t have mass immigration anymore - who'd want to live here?

You wan't something bad enough it's there, nothing to stop you or anyone else buggering off abroad if that's what you think of your country. It may cause inconvenience and a degree of hardship but as I say, if you seriously dislike it here as much as you make out you'd find a way. Otherwise it's just words to stoke up the argument.

Of course there is. An elderly mother, a wider family, my lack of being able to speak the language (as is normal for the English). I like living in England and where I live, and some of things it has achieved in terms of it's art, culture and some of it's history. I just hate the way it's going/gone and the utter **** storm that's going to hit come April 2019.

Living abroad in the EU after 29th March is going to become a major pain in the arse. The hoops to jump through are going to be lit with fire for British citizens.

It's not that bad then is it? I confidently state here and now that your predicted utter **** storm won't happen. Of course what you and I consider to be an utter **** storm are totally different things. After all the **** storms that were predicted immediately post June 2016 have absolutely crippled the UK economy and country haven't they.

The economy won't crash. You won't see another million plus workers dumped onto the dole queue. You won't see your weekly shopping all of a sudden go up in price by 30%. You won't see piles of rubbish accumulating in the streets because theres no money to pay the bin men. You won't see the price of petrol and diesel sky rocket by 25% or more.

What you might see is the price of high ticket items such as a new BMW or Merc motor go up but let's be honest here. When you pay £25k+ for a nice new 3 series another £1,5k on top of the asking price because of a new import tax shouldn't matter and I'd suggest if it does then you shouldn't be spending £25k on a motor in the first place.

There are going to be some tough times ahead. Some that will effect you and I in different ways but I guarantee you, I, our loved ones and future generations will survive and prosper, and so will this great country of ours.

When you are determined to jump off a cliff it's probably a good idea to stick your fingers in your ears and not heed the warnings and to have a tight blindfold so you cannot see the drop below. As you fall, keep saying to yourself, so far so good.

Not me. Can someone offer me a job in France, somewhere near the Med please? Spain or Portugal would also be accepted.

That way you could become one of those expats who spend their life sneering at Britain because deep down they regret their decision and need to feel better about themselves.

I don't know it. Its what I believe. Just like yours it's an opinion. An opinion I'm confident is true. Have I anywhere pronoused any of my predictions or opinions to be fact? No.

You see it as optimistic. I see it as being realistic knowing all that I know, see and read.

My glass is always half full and that's always stood me in good stead I life

To be fair you did say "I can guarantee", when you can't. Given your response here it was probably a throw away comment.

Yes it was. Guarantee in as much as it's what I believe.

With regards to the consequences of a no Brexit deal. I fervently believe it won't come to that. No one wants it. Not Europe and not the UK. It's in everyone's interest to reach a settlement and I believe that is exactly what everyone will do.

Europe wants to teach us a lesson and show that any Brexit doesn't work but in reality has to temper that wish with actually having to what is best for the European trade in general and that means doing a deal with the UK. May's problem is finding a deal that Europe can accept and that can't be seen as selling the public out of their wish to leave.

'Europe wants to teach us a lesson' exemplifies the misguided Europhobic language and hostile rhetoric that has all but guaranteed a disastrous outcome. No reasonable person would expect to leave an organisation and still expect to retain the advantages of belonging to it. Even if some kind of fudge is cobbled together, the Uk will by definition, not be enjoying the same benefits outside as in, the only question is the degree of damage that will be inflicted on the UK economy by this act of self harm.

I'm inclined to agree, but any deal is going to have compromises and I'm pretty sure there will be a lot of pro-brexiteers not getting the deal they feel they voted for. In effect, leaving all those that voted remain and half of those who voted leave unhappy. That is a large amount of the population not pleased and can't bode well for the future IMO.
