That's true but so is the FACT that this has still been a fantastic season when you consider how we started it. The fact that we're disappointed to be in the playoffs is testament to how much we improved after those first few games.

And I hope you are the only realist on this board because that means that my "I really don't think we'll go up now" comment will be wrong (and I'll happily eat my words plus dessert if it happens) and we'll be celebratring in Cardiff at last

I suggest you pop along to the opticians.

Even if we'd got automatic promotion you'd have whinged that we didnt win the championship.

Some people are never happy

I thought they played pretty well, just didnt get any luck their way. Fans were excellent.

Sod the title, top 3 would have been fine, it was in our hands and it slipped away. Although the management have hardly inspired a strong end to the season, the LDV definately derailed our momentum!

Now I'm really confused. Aren't you the same wiggy that was berating Gower for sub-standard performances yet now calling for his inclusion?

We played well but didn't take our chances is surely a better summary. For me the key moment was Petts' miss but I won't bear a grudge!

Am I the only one that thinks that a thread titled 'brilliant support' started by wiggy is a bit strange? My question to you wiggy, is have you ever said anything nice about Southend? Because I honestly can't remember it if you have.

I never thought I'd see the day but looking through some of his older posts, Wiggys talking a lot of sense. He's a realist!

I'm, sorry if that doesn't agree with the consensus opinion of the SZ clique but he's spot on. If we'd been good enough to get 3 points off of Orient and Oxford then we'd be up automatically, Simple As.

I don't understand the arguement that "if we were good enough get three points of so and so we would be up."  This arguement can work for any team in League Two.  Think about it, if Cambridge had been good enough to get three points in games they would be up.  You can say the same thing about game of the season.  If we had been good enough to beat Cheltenham on opening day we would have been promoted.

EDIT: Just read my post again, sorry if it came off a bit harsh Kenny, it's not my intention to have a go at you.

no worries

Simply my point is that 46 games have been played now we should stop clutching at straws that Swansea/ Grimsbys fans were out of order today and expecting the games to be replayed. Macclesfield aside we didn't pick up points in the bread and butter games since the LDV final. Yeah it's bad that we didn't lose as many games as Swansea did (14 to our 12) and we took 4 points of of Swansea this season, but we choked big time up at Oxford and at home to Orient where we should have taken ownership of the L2 title race when we got to the summit. Yeovil, Scunny and Swansea occupied the top 3 spots for most of the season. We were like a bunch of gatecrashers that arrived at the party a bit too late. Once the host found us out for what we were, we was turfed out onto the sidewalk again.

Our Kelly Holmes style approach to the title race got us to the top of the pile out of nowhere but we ultoimately "Paula Radcliffed" on the final lap.

I think you may be right there, me old sparring chum.

We've finished 4th and not a lot of people imagined that would happen back in October, even those of us dipping our toes in the Med. But I can't help thinking that when push came to shove in the last four weeks, we have actually been found wanting ...

At the end of the day, our performances during the whole of the 2004/05 have ranked us fourth in the final table. We have to accept that we simply haven't been good enough to finish in the top three ...

We do have a few weaknesses in the squad and the way we play. I feel these have been exposed in recent weeks, one would hope that will we strengthen in the summer and be able to give it a proper go from the off next season. For me, if Jay Smith gets himself fit in the summer (please please give him a contract!) and we sign a decent left back and maybe another winger (A fully fit Gutteridge may be the answer) and another striker to give us a different option up front we could be the finished article.

What encourages me is that Yeovil and Swansea were the nearly men and they bounced back in style this year.

Woooo.... wiggy is a realist... well done. Give yourself a huge pat on the back. And he was right as well! You must be feeling very smug and proud of yourself mate.

The point is that Southend, as with 90% of other teams, are one of those perennial "nearly" teams that usually have mediocre seasons that promise much and deliver little. This season they have promised much, much more than usual and have still, so far, delivered nothing.

But we have had our hopes and aspirations lifted to levels not seen for 15 years or so, we have had moments of pure exhilaration, and when the highs are that high then, as the probability of the low decreases, when it DOES come then that is like a spike through the heart.

This is what is supporting a "real" football team is all about. Real teams are not Man U and Chelsea, who can buy their way out of trouble should it arise. Real teams are like us, Grimsby, Kidderminster, Orient, Crewe, Torquay... the teams that occasionally give something to cheer and occasionally cause despair, but that 9 times out of 10 give nothing but a hope that gradually fades as the season progresses.

So, wiggy, you aren't some all seeing realistic oracle that can smugly say "I told you so" but just someone who seems to enjoy stating the bleeding obvious and revelling in it.

So how would you rectify the problem? Sack Tilson? Replace him with... well, who exactly? Is there a manager out there who would be as loyal, demand so much respect, and yet still achieve the record that Tilly has in a season and a half?

The trouble is wiggy, you say what we all know to be fact, but we just HOPE that things go our way. This season they haven't. But I'd have much, much more respect for your opinions and revelations if you backed up your views with a decent (or at least debatable) alternative. But you don't. We all know the teams shortcomings but solving them isn't easy and that, unfortun ately is the tricky bit. For a realist you're a bit lacking in "realistic" solutions mate aren't you?

But it isn't the end of the world and whilst you come on here spouting regular bouts of pessimistic (not realistic) drivel, the rest of us have had two of the most memorable seasons in living memory and firmly believe the club is now in the ascendancy. Rome wasn't built in a day and whilst we are all entitled to our opinions, I for one, just wish you would occasionally show us the other side of your wonderfully intuitive realism. Just for a bit.

Oh, and by the way, can you please discover the full stop key? When almost every sentence ends with one (and sometimes two or three) exclamation marks the effect is a bit lost...

I have just walked in the door after driving over 1000 miles in 34 hours to watch my team. I am greeted by wiggy and all his blinkered, rude, ignorant crap. I do not need this. wiggy YOU HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE! You have every right to your opinion, but once again your social skills are noticeable by their absence... Try posting on rivals for a while and give us a break... or do you get flamed on there?

The team have done brilliantly this year. The season isn't over yet by a long chalk. I have nothing but praise for what they have achieved. If you're not happy with it, wiggy, go and support Chelsea or Man Ure.

apologies for the 1am posts, vodka always makes me a bit too meloncholly!

In reflection, Whilst I agree with Wiggy on this occasion I think I went a bit overboard in my praise.

I've read through this post and have realised as ever what it is I really really hate about this club. It's $%&*# like Wiggy who have made it such an absolute pain to support this club for over 40 years. He didn't go and is slagging the team. Of course we're crap Wiggy we finished 4th for f**ks sake.
Here for all the $%&*# like Wiggy who didn't go is what the Grimsby manager said, "I feel for Steve because Southend are a very decent outfit. Southend have been one of the more consistent sides in the division and deserved third spot".
Well in the end we weren't good enough by a fag paper.
Wiggy in the immortal words of Vic Jobson, "there are another 91 league clubs to support". Just do me a favour and **** off.

The amount of chopping and changing over the past 6 weeks has cost us. During the good run, we barely changed the teeam but IMO Tilly has made too many changes going into each game (im not talking about the inforced one's) ...

We lacked width even more than we normally do yesterday and the only time we looked dangerous was when Freddy and Gray got into the channels and then we'd only have 2 to aim for in the box!
