Zone Update Doesn't look like anyone's coming in...

Oon the subject of Mulgrew, over this summer I have read 3 different people saying they have inside info:

- the first was after the end-of-season dinner, a poster said they had spoken to Mulgrew and his g/f and they wanted to go back to Scotland

- later on someone claimed to have been told by Mulgrew's agent that he definitely wasn't going to Southend

Those two were before Swindon showed any interest.

Now another inside piece of info says he definitely wanted to come to Southend.

3 pieces of contradictory inside info - but who is telling the porky pies?

This is why it all gets so tedious though, I don't believe for a minute he was ever seriously considering Swindon, and I think there may be quite a lot of truth in him wanting to go back to Scotland. Unless we ever hear it from the man himself in an interview we'll never know for sure. Great shame though from our point of view.

its me its me its meeee

listen at the end of the day none of us are actually CM so no one knows the real truth all I know is the scenario that occured is something that happened

The frustration of only having 16 outfield players is somewhat getting to me. From enjoying success over the past number of seasons and travelling to some grounds I never thought I would get to visit when we were in the Championship I am now nervously pessimistic about our chances this season. Does anyone know the odds on us gaining promotion. For the first time in a number of years I don't think we will be either end of the table but am currently thinking 14th-18th.

The loss of Daryll and Gower I consider potentially enormous - match winners (think back to Man U game if you don't think a GK can have this title) Then we have Furlong who might not be able to cut the mustard at his age - has to prove his fitness and ability for this level to the fans. Lee Barnard hasnt scored 20 a season in the pro leagues. It is a bit of a guessing game but I am worried about our prospects this season. But saying that you wil not find me berating the team management or performances.

This is all personal opinion and in no way is me being offensive towards the club management for a lack of signings. Just going with what we have - we need key players to stay fit!! So So important. I am worried these loan signings we are bringing in may be very short term.

Crikey. I'd not thought of it that way, but what you say makes an awful lot of sense.

We've been financially screwed for some time, though, and in an economic downturn - especially when the new-build residential housing market (i.e. Ron's business) has fallen through the floor - it could well be that we don't have two brass farthings to rub together, and so Ron has got to look for alternative sources of funding.

Such as calling in the numerous loans that the club owes SEL and RHL.

Not looking good, is it? This could be a pretty tough season; but then moving to the new ground was never going to be a totally pain-free exercise, I suspect.

Matt
If this the case why doesn’t Ron write a letter to us shareholders (owners) asking for us to invest another £130 or so...

We all know the country is in a recession
Sky high fuel prices with the cost of raw materials has doubled in 12 months i.e. STEEL

I for one will be happy to double my investment in the club I love and want to survive and Build our new home

For me, the Scotland theory remains the most plausible. Remember that Mulgrew's partner gave birth only a few months ago. It seems pretty logical to me that they might want to raise the child in Scotland, where presumably they are closer to both sets of families.

Could be worse I suppose, we could be trying to sign Gareth Barry or Cristiano Ronaldo.

You can see it now tbh. Revell and Walker being played on the wing then the boo-boys will end up moaning because there not scoring when being played out of position.

I honestly am very appauled. Considering the players and important players we have sold/released which some for money and a fair bit of space for wages aswell.

I think between Tilson and Martin and all they have done since they have both came in have done great jobs, but at the moment this is ridiculous.

We are simply not going to have the legs to get promoted in my opinion. Between Macca, Bailey, hopefuully Grant and the defenders we are bound to get a fair amount of suspensions and obviously injuries will occur. so how the hell are we going too cope to be honest...

Worrying.....

The size of the squad and the apparent lack of activity is very worrying especially in these troubled times financially. I am sure there are many people out there who thought twice about renewing their season cards simply due to lack of funds.
I renewed the three I buy at the first opportunity with a blind faith in Tilly and Ron that we would hold on to the likes of Mark Gower and bring in Mulgrew and others building on the near miss of last season.
With only a few days to go to the start of the season what have we to show? Mark has gone and a number of other players have gone and not been replaced. The signings have been very suspect from the matches I have seen. Hopefully we will reap the reward of Furlong's experience but he needs someone to supply the crosses. Sankofo did not look anything special and seemed to moan at other players more than concentrate on his game against Fulham.
The rest of the squad must feel a little demotivated, how can we expect the best out of them if the club does not support them with back up.
Some of the players left in the squad were not good enough last season, wont be this and a number are on the transfer list so will they give 100%?
If we manage to start well then we could be another Orient and simply fall away due to the lack of squad members.
Furlong may be too old, Barnard gets injured too often, Revell did not look good enough last season so all the pressure will be on the youngsters to perform and they will have a drop in form at some stage and expecting them to play through it could ultimately shatter their long term confidence. Players will be played out of position which is again no good for their confidence. The comment about playing the 'diamond' system may be out of necessity rather than a constructive plan and I have not seen this system work well at this level especially as most players are not familiar with it and ours may not have the ability to do it well.
The gem this season will be Damian Scannell but again form will drop without players around him to give support.
Looks like I am bemoaning everything about the club at the moment but having seen what happened last year when it took us ages to get in a good striker (firstly Clarke then Barnard) and I really believe it cost us promotion, lets not leave it so late this time so we can make a sustained and serious attempt at promotion.
Yes I think the supporters and especially the season card holders deserve a little more positive activity or at least a word of encouragement from Ron.

Indeed. Am surprised that you, fbm, have come out with that. Bit a TTK type statement that is. :stunned: ;)

Why?

Read between the lines.

The squad is looking to be bolstered by loan signings.

We are looking for a specialist left back.

There are 9 days until the opening day and only 1 friendly left.

Yet 3 weeks ago Tilly was expecting to make 4 signings.

Grant may be one. The left back triallist (whoever he may be) could be two.

So is it not therefore reasonable to assume that, left back aside, we will be sticking with what we have (for whatever reason) and look to strengthen with loanees?

If someone can tell me another conclusion that can be firmly drawn from those statements, then I'd like to hear it. Of course, we can all speculate on what hasn't been said... but I have focused on what Brushy has stated.

But he makes no reference to permanent signings - just that the Club will be looking to make a greater use of the loan market this season. You're choosing to read into that that we're only going to sign loanees.

If you want to stick to what has been said:

- Tilly said we're planning on making three or four signings before the start of the season.

- Brushy has said that we'll be looking to bring in loanees but that this won't be until after the season has started.

If you're only dealing in what has been said then the only conclusion you can draw is that the loanees are on top of the three or four signings we want to bring in by next saturday.

Eh?

So is it not therefore reasonable to assume

assume = *** out of u and me

God I hate that management tripe :)

The bottom line is we dont know whats going on, it doesnt seem that we will be signing 4 players, but to just write off permanent signings based on a news article regarding loans is very negative.

We will most probably get 2 players so thats a start and will leave us with just a decent winger to get.

We could do with strength in depth after that, but we can still sign players for another month and loanees will help.

Im not inspired at the moment, neither am I suicidal. If however Harrold is playing left back next week Ill gladly jump on the manic depressive bandwagon thats been rolling around Shrimperzone this close season.

I think i speak for a lot of Southend United fans when i say that i am starting to get worried about the upcoming season, not only on the pitch but also off of it. Whilst staying up is definately our first priority i think it's also a must that we make sure that Fossett's Farm is a certainty to happen. In a few year, maybe 2 this club will depend heavily on Fossett's Farm, so much so that it will be out lifeline, along with the supporters.

I think the credit crunch has hit us hard, much harder than we probably anticipated if i'm honest , but despite this i fail to see how we aren't spending money in the transfer market. I mean, i know we spent £200,000 on Walker in January but we've made a sure profit in this summers window. MacDonald, Hoopers and Liptak's sales have made us around £300,000 odd, so surely we have at least £100,000 to spend.

I know it doesn't work this way in football and we've probably had to spend the money elsewhere, but where? We haven't done anything that i am aware off to make us need to spend money. Okay we have the away pre-season friendlies but that only costs around £100 in petrol each game which would only be around £500. So where has the other £95,500 gone?

It's been said over 100 times and it'll be said again we simply don't have a big enough squad to compete with even staying in this league, let alone trying to aim for a play-off place, which is the vibe i get from the management trio. They said a couple of weeks ago that they were looking at 4 signings. Well where the bloody hell are they? We have to have at least 11 out field players before the first game against Peterborough. We have 12, but some are so crap i'm worried

Francis
Barrett
Clarke
Sankofa
Bailey
Moussa
Scannell
Barnard
Harrold
Foran
Walker
Revell

Of all the players we had to still have it had to be Harrold, didn't it? Just had to be. No disrespect to the prince, but he just doesn't cut it at this level and i think he well knows that. I can see why we got rid of him at first chance all those years ago. He should've stayed away. And Foran, well i haven't seen much of him in ages.

We signed him when we were in the Championship, we're not in the Championship anymore, we should stop looking at players that are Championship level, look for players that are League One level, then move on. As for Foran. Well, he hardly inspired me when he was at us in the Championship and seeing as he had to move to Darlington on loan. Meaning he failed to beat Harrold and Barnard in getting a place. Something very embarrassing for a player of his supposed calibre.

Despite having only 9 outfield players, one thing that would make me unbelievably happy would be seeing Harrold and Foran leave, we're paying them around £5,000 in wages, together. If they're not wanted and are hoping to move away, do so. Flog them off.

Now with the current players that we have i think that we should be looking at playing something like this, which i posted somewhere earlier on another website. So it would look something like this:

Mildenhall
? - Clarke - Barrett - Francis
Grant*
Scannell - Moussa - Bailey
Barnard - Walker

Now surely this would cover our Left wing problem temporarly , whilst Grant isn't a certainty to sign if he did sign i would put him in that place, where he is most effective and would be able to spray passes to the midfield trio of Scannell , Moussa , Bailey who can relay it onto the strikers.

Our subs bench would look something like this:

1. Ian Joyce
2. Osei Sankofa
3. Harrold
4. Revell
5. Herd

Now, that doesn't look like a bench that we could rely on that much. No disrespect to Herd, he is young but he hasn't played a proper competitive game at all for Southend. Granted he has played a series of years in the Reserves and U18'S but i just don't feel he will be able to perform this year if given the first team chance and i'd hate for him to get the boo boys on his back.

I've already spoken out about Harrold and Foran, both ubershite in my opinion and should be flogged off when we have a big enough squad, but unfortunately for the moment they will have to do, no matter how crap they are. I would be very surprised if they managed to score at all.

So that leaves a keeper, who's American, but tall and able to do the job. Just a shame we can only play 1 at a time. Sankofa, again a young player who needs time to improve but i feel that he really impressed in the pre-season and dispite one or two mistakes he will become a decent player.

So who could we sign in the next week and a few days? Well ,as stated we'd need a LB, LM, CM and possibly another good striker. Once we get all these in then i feel that we can release, or sell for cash, which i would hope we do , Foran and Harrold. Then we would have around 15 decent players, which would be a decent base to build on, plus McCormack, we'd have 16. A small squad, but a competitive one.

So, signings , possible loanee's as well. But before i say some names, it'd be hilarious is Paul Brush was reading this, or Tilly. But i doubt it. Anyway.

LB: Joe Jacobson ~ A young 21 year old who plays for Bristol Rovers and is the current Wales U21 captain. Versatile as he is able to play across the whole of our defence which is an added bonus should any potential injuries arise. Also able to play in the ML role

ML: Jeff Smith ~ A 27 year old from Carlisle who appeared over 30 times for them in their campaign for promotion last year, has experience in promotion races as part of the Bolton Wanderers squad that gained promotion from the Championship to the Premiership. A technical player but one who will do a decent job.

ST: Leon McKenzie ~ I've said it before and i'll say it again, Leon McKenzie is a must to target. And like Smith, experienced in promotion campaigns. In the past two years he has only appeared 37 times and with the arrival and current inclusion of Freddy Eastwood, Leon Best , Michael Mifsud , Kevin Kyle and Robbie Simpson it's unlike he'll get many games and would prefer a loan move out.

CM: Ed Upson ~ A young player at Ipswich who will be looking at some first team action away from Portman Road, unless he wishes to continue another year in the Reserves and or U18's. i'd look into getting him to fill the gap left by McCormack's injury and then use him whenever needed.

Thank you and that's my 200000000 cents

Think those 3 went for nearer £200,000.

Dont think we are paying them £5,000 and we are actually trying to sell them, no one wants them though...

PS Well done you win longest post of the week :)

I'm not going to refer point by point to what the rosey nosey brigade have said on this or the 97 other threads, as they won't accept whatever seemingly logical arguments any of we non-football experts will say.

All I can base my thoughts on are what both Steve Tilson & Ron Martin have said the players do's for the 3 years before last (as I wasn't there this year). They both have openly admitted that our squads at the time were too small, even to their credit in years we actually got promoted. Every time they insisted that there needed to be an active 1st team squad of 22ish, i.e. 2 players vying for each place. Not my words, but those of the rosey nosey brigade's beloved chairman & manager. And my beloved manager& chairman as well.

So when they are criticising the people here who doubt that 15-16 proper squad players are enough, they are actually disagreeing with Tilly & Ron, unless in the last 12 months they've apparently decided that you can get out of L1 with less than that. And if they have decided that then sorry I can't really see how they can hope to improve or match last season's showing with a squad that is several, not just a couple, short of what they themselves have frequently admitted is a miniumum squad profile.

Forget Harrold. FACT is we're paying Foran £3k a week, that's why no fecker wants him & that's why he's happy to see his contract out with us & do feck all.

As for Harrold, I've no idea how much he's on but, bear in mind we signed him when we were a CCC club. It's highly likely then that he's on £1500 or even plus per week, so the £5k you pooh pooh isn't going to be far off.

I know hes been told his future is away from southend but Ritchie Foran can play up front and on either wing. we should keep him just to plug some holes in our small squad
