Films you've watched recently.

Hope Springs. This is a trashy Hollywood film about a subject (marriage guidance counselling)which deserves a far more serious portrayal than it gets here.Even pretty good performances from Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones can't save this movie from disembowelling itself with an(unintentionally)hilarious happy ending.

Cabin in the Woods - wow, an incredible truly original film. I can't praise it highly enough. Superb! 10/10

I agree it is a very enjoyable film, but it is certainly not original.

I spotted bits lifted from five other movies, and I am sure there were more. Plus the ending borrows one the themes running through probably America's best known horror writer of the early 20th century.

It is rather good.

Although, small criticism, for future reference, fellow movie-makers of the world, don't give your character a name like Merida and then give every character accents that make it sound like her name's Murder when they say her name. Unintentionally hillarious.

That's the idea though. It turns the horror movie cliches on their head.

Besides which, unless you pretty much chuck the rules out the window it's practically impossible to come up with an entirely original concept.

Looper (2012) Dir: Rian Johnson

At some point in the future time travel is discovered, but it has been made illegal. However, organised crime syndicates use it as a way of disposing bodies by sending them back in time to be killed by a Looper. In order to ‘close a loop’, the future Looper will also be sent back 30 years to be executed by his earlier self. The younger Looper receives a payment in gold for his services; he is released from his contract, and he has those 30 years to live his life how he chooses until the fateful day when he is returned back in time. The problems start when top Looper Joe Simmonds fails to kill his target when he recognises the man who appears in front of him as his older self.

The problem with time travel films is they seem to throw up more questions than answers, and this movie is no exception. However, if you can suspend you disbelief for a couple of hours and don’t worry too much about the paradoxes being created left, right and centre, this is a pretty decent movie.

Bruce Willis plays the older version of the Simmons, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is his younger self and both are equally good in the role. Willis is the more cynical and driven, but riddled with guilt as he carries out the plan he believes will alter the future for the better. By contrast, Gordon-Leveitt’s young Joe is more naïve, and despite being just a hired killer, thinks he too can change what is to come, but by utilizing more subtle and less drastic measures.

Overall, I enjoyed the film, the pace was good, and there was plenty action with a few comedic quips thrown in to keep me happy and engaged with the movie. My only bugbear was the noticeable lull in the proceedings as we approached the dramatic finale, and as I sat in my chair, I must admit I just wanted them to get on with it. That said it still scores a healthy 8 out of 10 from me.

Wreckers - Recorded from the telly. Claire Foy and Sherlock Holmes move to the country to start a family. Introduce a loopy nuts brother and the whole thing unravels.

It was alright, like an extended Emmerdale episode. 6/10

Detachment- soul crushing but enjoyable...in a soul crushing kind of way. 7/10.

Blow- first time of watching. Good film. 8/10.

The Damned United- second viewing, just as good. 7/10.

I watched The Campaign with Will Ferrell.

About a presidential election. I have to say I was disappointed. The rating of about 6.3 on IMDB does this justice. It is laugh out loud funny in places but just goes totally silent in between and is disappointing in my opinion. I don't have any allegiance with Will Ferrell so there is no bias either way. This was not worth the Cinema entrance fee that I thought Ted was a number of weeks back.

Has anyone seen the French film Untouchables with English subtitles about the old gent who needs a carer and a guy with a criminal past gets the job. This has a very high rating on IMDB. I am keen but would like insight as to whether a guy who doesn't understand French will enjoy this watching through subtitles.

Has anyone seen Emma Watson's new film, The perk of being a Wallflower (not sure if that is the exact title)? That had a better write up than I expected and was more manly than I thought too but not sure if I am being lulled into a false sense of security.

Cheers.

Subtitled films don't bother me at all, but this looks syrupy toss. No thanks very much.

Mark Kermode liked it, which is generally good enough for me. As I have given up trying to get a life, I'll catch it on Sky when it's on in a few months.

Thanks MK. Brutal opinion of the first. I believe it is a remake from an original from the 70s or 80s. I'm surprised you are so dismissive of this if I am honest. I'll see if I can find anyone that has seen it if no one on here has.

Not a bad shout waiting for it to appear on Sky. I wouldn't have been to the cinema recently if it wasn't for moving in with the Mrs and having to do things that we mutually like. This is one of very few things. The cover for the film that they have used makes it look so tame though!

I'm a cynical old git :winking:
