In a world of my own.
As I am sure most of you do - Sunday night is TV night. After Mrs DtS has conjured up a culinary delight that supassed even her own high standards (Aromatic Chicken with Apricots - Delightful) we sat down to watch the box.

Mrs DtS intially made a school boy error of choosing Coronation Street as our viewing. I made it clear to her that watching a load of Northerners moaning was not my idea of fun and we swapped to C4 to watch a programme.

It was basically a programme about a bloke who predicted 9/11. Basically this bloke worked for Morgan Stanley and because he had predicted the terror attacks weeks before they happended and planned for it. He managed to get all but seven of his 2000+ staff out the building without harm.

As the programme ended Mrs DtS came out with possibly the most outragous claim. ever She said that more people would have got out alive if the builders of the world trade centre had added a firemans pole down the centre of the building.

I pointed out that if there were say 150 floors and each floor had 100 people on each floor then that would be 15,000 people that would have to go down the firemans pole which would take longer than the stairs Mrs DtS was moaning about.

In addtion to this I also commented that if you were on say floor 70 you would have no chance of getting out as you would have to wait till everyone from floors 150 down to 71 had gone down the pole.

I personally would not fancy my chanes of getting on the pole on floor 150 and holding on to the bottom floor.

I said that stairs were a better option as at least everyone can use them at the same time in theory.

Despite the fact she is very clever normally she failed to grasp the concept that this is a really poor idea. Her count comment to my "It would take hours to get everyone out" was we could have loads of firemans poles.

I personally think this is the worst idea I have ever heard. Am I right or what?

Its the stairs or those office parachutes that someone came up with.

maybe she just wants to slide down a firemans pole!?!... where's Ricey!?

Alternatively get a tip-off from Mossad that the buildings are going to get hit and take the day off work. 500 Israelis can't be wrong.

Alternatively go for the Wile E Coyote option and buy Acme Super Wings ("You can really fly") and take your cahnce that way out the window.

With the amount of friction generated over a couple of carpeted floors, if she were sliding up down your pole for 70 hours, she's have burnt through her thighs and your bone.

It's a daft idea. Proper daft.

:thump:

That sounds better Matt..:hilarious:

Ridiculous idea Dts ...You will have to punish her acccordingly;)

This is a special case of the max flow network problem with multiple sources.

There are companies that specialise in designing spaces so as to facilitate the most efficient flow of people in the event of such disasters.

Have you ever been in a building with firemans poles (excluding fire stations and the Ghostbusters HQ)?

You wouldnt be able to use the pole anyway if there was a fire because metal is a conductor of heat. The same if tens of people use it, it's going to get warm at some point, so you just couldnt use it.

I think Mrs DTS missed the best solution. Some kind of giant helter skelter and hessian sacks for all would have sorted out that 9/11 mess in no time.

Admittedly, over 150 floors, you'd probably begin to approach terminal velocity, but the sack should insulate you from the worst of it.

I thought this was going to be a thread about installing pole dancing areas for employees in the work place...

I stopped reading at Aromatic Chicken with Apricot....

Now lamb and apricot I can understand....

She has had a shocker. Do like the helter skelter idea though...

With the amount of friction generated over a couple of floors, if you were sliding down a pole for 70 floors, you'd have burnt through your thighs and hands down to the bone.

It's a daft idea. Proper daft.

Indeed, add to that the searing heat that would (no doubt) have transfered to the pole, I don't think anyone would have been able to grip the pole. At those temperatures, without wanting to get morbid, you'd fuse to the pole anyway.

I am a Fire Fighter and don't even get a pole :(

Im sure a liberal spraying of Wd 40 would help keep friction burns to a minimum.. just make sure you clear the landing bean bag promply as if the buidling is on fire those behind you may not observe the '2 second rule' ...

This made most of my office laugh today. The thought is quite ridiculous and probably the worst thing i have heard of in my life. 10/10 for making us all laugh though.:D
