Interesting Point Made Post match by PB

I didn't read it necessarily as a criticism of MM but that simply he has different methods to him.

Indeed. It seems people are trying to read too much into it. There seems to be two main arguments: that MM was wrong and PB has proved that point, and that PB is an egotist who can't help put the boot in.

I didn't see it as either of those. I just saw it as an honest opinion. Maybe he could have worded it better, but still.

I half expected him to whip out a joint and stick on some jazz. What a dude.

I think our Phil is still acclimatising, so it might take him a while to relinquish the vardnasi Indian silk scarf and tan suede Vitharia brogues, Asked if he could find a striker like Harry Kane, he apparently said who? Hari Kari !

U serious ?

Absolutely.

I respect peoples personal choice to gamble and smoke but the gambling industry should not be permitted to associate with wealthy successful people any more than the tobacco industry is allowed to associate with super fit sports people.

In any case I doubt Jose Morinho is permitted to place many bets and has probably never experienced gambling his weeks pay away by Sunday on his phone down the pub like many who didn't stop before the fun stopped.

Firstly I respect your opinion as a fellow Southend supporter, of course. ?

But the ‘Phil Brown is responsible for all the worlds woes’ rhetoric is utter rubbish as far as I’m concerned.

The way people go on about him he’ll no doubt be in the queue for Hell only behind the likes of Hitler, Stalin, Fred West & Jedward.

PB made some questionable signings during his 5 years but which manager hasn’t done the same, plus who gave him the green light to sign them in the first place in pursuit of Championship football?

So it’s down to Ron Martin? However if the guy hadn’t put his money where his mighty mouth is 23 years ago we probably wouldn’t have a club right now. Or do we say it’s Vic Jobson & Barry Frys fault, etc etc. So where does it stop with the blame culture?

The finger can be pointed wherever people wish, but the fact is we are staring non league in the face due to a combination of bad decisions by a combination of people, including owner, several managers & many players over the past few seasons, only one of which is Phil Brown.

Without wishing to blow smoke up his behind, he got us promoted on one of our best days as a supporter & missed out on the L1 playoffs by a single point.

Let’s at least give the door a chance to hit his backside on the way in before we say “don’t let it hit you in the arse on the way out”.

We have 5 games to save ourselves, let’s give him & the players our full support- for the next few weeks at least & pray for a miracle from the leathery skinned legend that is Phil Brown.

Come On You Blues!
Good points, but just don't understand all this vitriol aimed at Jedward :Dim:

Thanks......A fair and balanced summary. Yes, our Ronnie did put his own money in, but his tenure will ultimately have to be judged on its results, and from the situation we find ourselves in at present, I would imagine that most fans would regard him as an abject failure. I know that idea might upset the “Ron can do no wrong” squad, ......but surely that is the reality?

......more like ”KamiKaze” !!!

For somebody who decided to undertake a half time team talk in the centre circle I'd hardly call his techniques orthodox.

I think a lot of people who dislike PB base this more on his personality than his achievements at the club. The five years with him in charge were far better than the three years since he left. PB had to deal with embargoes and transfer restrictions early on in his time at the club, players improved under his leadership, the squad were always fit and the team was fully committed every. The same cannot be said of this season.

I would rather judge a manager on results than their perceived personality. Even two of our best managers, Dave Webb and Barry Fry had shady backgrounds and you wouldn’t fully trust either of them! PB is a passionate football man, is very affable and has immersed himself in the area much better than probably most of our recent managers. He is happy to engage with fans whether that be at the pub, casino or racecourse etc. Compare that to Sol who couldn’t even remember what team he was managing and completely distanced himself.

PB‘s interviews with the media are more interesting and insightful than the usual generic comments most managers make. Though he says some things people don’t like at least he is honest, probably too honest for his own good. The other day he even claimed Ron was difficult to work with, not managers say that about their chairman in their first media interview in their new job! Fair play to him for that!

I think some fans base their dislike for Brown on him laying the foundations for the three years that followed his departure. Not a single-handed mission but would those three years have been more prosperous with him still in charge? We’ll never know.

I don’t particularly care about his personality, I just want him to get that “new manager bounce” and keep us up.

I dont see them differently as any foundations that were laid by dick bate or alvin martin. Ron signed the cheques, phil rolled the dice and mistakes were made, being injury prone or a ******* who wanted to down tools are not predictable traits.

Surely the flip side of the coin is that ron wasnt willing to invest and grant the manager with finances to try and move the club forward to try and become a consistent championship club. How would we all have felt then if the chairman showed zero ambition.

Many mistakes have been made along the way, to solely blame phil brown for all the **** thats happened the last few years is incorrect imo.

it’s not that I solely blame Phil Brown, his decision with signing “strong” characters which split the dressing room, signing average high earners on long contracts, unable to manage someone else signed/team, performed poorly in cup competitions leads me and his abrasive character when things don’t got to plan to lose the dressing room, lead me believe he is partly to blame for the years that followed and the remaining 6 game “cup” final matches will not end well.

If you just want to believe he was successful and therefore the best signing I suggest those rose tinted glasses blinkering to what happened and complaints on the zone over his many years. Sure league position wise he did well over all the years at the club but you need to be very blinkered, anti Mark approach, or pro it’s change so it must be good to think that he is a good signing at this stage.

I do think we have less chance to stay up now than before, I want to be proved wrong as I want to watch league football at root halls next season but I’m equally worried how long until we sign the next manager, what style/culture/psychology the club will have, what players will be signed and when and how much preseason will they get.

To be clear, I did say it wasn’t a single-handed mission. I personally put more blame on Ron than PB too. But PB was a part of the creation of this situation.

100% this. The de-regulation of the gambling industry was a disgrace IMO. The way it is so accessible 24/7 is equivalent of having a fully stocked bar in front of an alcoholic, and we are sitting on a time bomb for all the problems it will cause. But as it is a problem that mainly affects the poor who gives a ****.

N.B. I like a bet myself, but I don’t have a gambling problem.

He was so much older then he's younger than that now. :Winking:

What makes a 'good' manager is largely influenced by external factors, hence why some managers succeed at some clubs and fail at others. Phil Brown inherited an extremely talented squad, and these players formed the basis of the promotion team that went up in 2015. He was in a financial position to add players to this spine, without being forced to rummage through the bargain bin.

Personally, while I respect Brown for his achievements with the club, I find it impossible to compare him as a manager with the likes of Molesley, Campbell or Sturrock, each of whom inherited an absolute **** of a situation. Sturrock turned it round, the other two couldn't, but they certainly didn't walk into an easy job.

If Brown can keep us up it will be his biggest achievement in his time with us. Even better than the promotion season. I hope he manages it.
