If a White MP had said that or similar about Black people they would be made to resign within 2 days maximum. There does seem to be double standards.

No, but she should resign for having shocking judgement, being entirely incompetent, a complete sell-out, and having the level of contempt for ordinary working people that seems mandatory for the modern champagne socialist.

I've always regarded Diane Abbott as essentially an establishment figure. Despite the radical lefty image that both she and the and right wing media promote she is essentially a conservative influence. She's all about the same old boring rights and responsibilities agenda.

If I were a young working class black person I do not believe that I would feel any affinity towards her. Her appearances on 'this week' always showed just how out of touch she was with the modern black community.

Ruling elites have always used divide and rule tactics in order to maintain order/status quo. If she had used the term 'ruling elites' rather than 'white' she would be arguably be making a valid point. Her poor judgement in this instance is appalling.

I wouldn't sack her for being racist as I don't believe she is, I just wouldn't have given her the job in the first place on account of her being rubbish. She has spent her entire adult life in largely white elite circles. To all intents and purposes she is part of the largely white elite.

I reckon most MPs are hypocrites, spend their whole time telling us what to do then do what they like themselves, whether that's to do with pay, pensions, schools or holidays, however, I definitely believe that Diane Abbott's comments are intrinsically racist here. As others have said, if it had been a white MP coming out with an equivalent comment, then they would have felt the full weight of Parliament demanding their resignation.

And to add to the confusion about what is and isnt acceptable, his clip from French TV shows the poor old United full back who was so bitterly upset by remarks mae by Luis Suarez, using the n word in a rant aobut Jimmy Hasselbaink.

So if a white person uses the n word about a black person its wrong but a black person can use the same word about another black person and thats ok.

Perhaps Diane Abbot could investigate.

She has a few times shown questionable decision making and has a fairly infuriating manner about her. As a Labour voter I'm not mad keen on fighting her corner to keep hold of her if she is going to make such gaffs. While I completely agree that divide and rule is used by the establishment - most notably recently pitting public vs private sector working class people against each other, the word 'white' shouldn't feature. Though if public figures use new media they never have a chance to switch off and they'll all end up stitching themselves up with a moment of loose talk at some point.

And it annoys me when people say things then apologise when they realise they've caused controversy, like Gordon Brown when he called that voter a bigot. You're not sorry for what you said, you're sorry you got caught and it caused offence. Hypocrites, like most politicians. Her comments themselves are divisive. She says she was referring to 19th century colonialism. Well it's not the 19th century anymore, Diane! Plenty of black dictators have played "divide and rule", look all over Africa.
