The man in charge of Saturday's rather daunting looking match is Eddie Ilderton from Tyne and Wear. He is in his 7th season as a League referee but really it's his 6th as he missed all of last season through injury. In his mid to late thirties, he works in the building industry.
He refereed Southend quite recently (no more than 20 miles away from Leeds) when he did the away defeat at Huddersfield in January. By all accounts it was a very good performance and he didn't caution anyone (not even Macca). Before that he had not refereed a Southend match for over 5 years when co-incidentally he officiated in our 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield in 2003/4. Unsurprisingly he cautioned Drewe.
His only other Southend match was the year before when we lost 2-0 away at York. (Good heavens, was it only 7 years ago we were playing and losing to teams like York? ....... we might be playing them again next year).
He gets a good number of Championship games and has a reputation of being one of the better Football League referees. His 31 games this season have produced an average-ish 80 yellow cards and 5 reds.
He recently figured in the live TV match between Tranmere and Norwich in which he wasn't quite as bad as some were making out having been badly let down, twice, by an assistant referee.
He has already officiated in two comfortable home wins for Leeds this season and I can see little to prevent a hat-trick.
Assisting will be Martin Coy from County Durham and Peter Davies from Cheshire with Andy Scregg travelling all the way from Merseyside just to hold the numbers board.
