I dare say most people my age would say that they couldn't live without a mobile, but I could. Whilst I use it quite a lot, there are many ways around it. I'd just use the phone at work to call the talking clock with, and if I can't use my mobile to txt my mum to tell her when I'll be in, then I'll stay out all night. Simple.

I use my phone for work and as a landline for social calls (in fact I can't remember the last time I used the phone at home to call someone) so I probably couldn't live without it.

It doesn't, Scriv.

I was going to borrow a work tri-band phone to take with me when I went out to Japan on holiday; but after a considerable amount of research, we discovered that their system was compatible with a similar system in place in California... and that's it. It's not on the conventional tri-band frequency, that's for sure.

Matt
isnt there now quad band phones, which im presuming covers japan and Canvey island?

The problem with Japan is that they always live at the bleeding edge, and in fact most of the networks out there are not GSM compatible. However the ones that were did use the same bands as the USA, which were different bands to the rest of the world.

However the only GSM networks in Japan have been converted to 3G so I guess that now means you are stuffed unless you have a 3G phone.

Also for the record:

Each region used 2 bands for GSM

USA/Japan used 850/1900
Rest of the world used 900/1800

So when you got a tri band they dropped one of the USA bands off usually the least common. So the quad phones give back that other band so you are more likely to get coverage.

I could, but I'd be extremely loathed to do so. However much I get miffed when Mrs Durera wakes me up from a slumber on the train for some stupid reason, or for me speaking to Ben in front of people, it'd be too much of a pain in the arse now-a-days to do with out.

Besides, text's great.
