Probably mentioned it before but it doesn't get any more obscure for me than Rochdale home on a Friday night during the Bobby Moore years. Just over a 1,000 turned up and had a row with a bloke in the East stand who insisted I was sitting in his seat.

I reckon that was under Spud.

I swear Carl Leaburn scored half his career goals against us. IIRC Newcastle's boss got the winner after being set up by Garry bloody Nelson.

Heartbreaking.

Yep 2 weeks later we played Barry Fry's Birmingham away when it all kicked off in the away end when some fans were arrested for not sitting down!! Yep arrested and charged with obstructing the police for not sitting down!!

Port Vale in 75 we were winning 3-0 at half time and held on in the second half to draw 3-3 .I have never been so shell shocked watching Southend since .

Not heard of this game! what was the atmosphere like at FT with both sets of fans and players??

The Southend players had looks of where am I on their faces . I remember Alan Little face was just blank .There was 4500 supporters at Roots Hall it seemed to me we were all in a big void .

What about Charlton away under Fry (IIRC)? 0-0 at half time. During the break my dad said to me that the game had 0-0 written all over it, and I agreed.

Within a short space of time we were 3-0 down. We then pulled it back to 3-3, only to lose it in the last minute.

This was a game i first thought of on reading the thread.
Was this when Charlton had just moved back to Valley?
Second half i thought i was going to have a heart attack!

I remember the Port Vale game vividly, they wore a strange kit of white shirts with thin black stripes down the sleeves. It was all over at 3-0...then all of a sudden we collapsed. Strange feeling at 12.

I will always remember the first FA Cup game I attended against Aston Villa in Nov 1971, there were 17k in attendance and the LEGEND Billy Best getting the winner. Am I right in saying that this is the second former European Cup winners, we have a 100% record against?

FA Cup away to Mansfield in the early 70s, losing 2-1, Gary Moore hitting the bar and bouncing down on the line, Mansfield away to Man U in the next round. Another one around that time, Swindon 0 Southend 2, with Don Rogers playing for them. Division 4, Southend 7 Workington 0, with Eddie Clayton watching in the stands before signing. Seven points needed for promotion with seven games to play and they blew it. I hope I remembered it right, sooooo long ago!
29/3/68. Southend 7 Workington 0 was actually the home debut of former Spur Eddie Clayton in which he scored 2 goals, other scorers were McKinven(2), Smillie, May & Billy Best attendance was 13,871. Eddie had made his debut at Swansea in a 2-2 draw(McKinven, Smillie) this was followed by a 3-1 win at Aldershot in which Clayton scored along with Phil Chisnall & a John McKinven penalty. After the Workington match we had 9 matches to play winning only 1 against Rochdale Home(3-1), 2 draws against Chesterfield 1-1 & Crewe 0-0 with 6 defeats at Lincoln 4-2, Doncaster twice 2-1 both games, Bradford City 2-1, Notts. County twice 0-1 & 4-3. These results certainly cost us automatic promotion as we ended only 4 points behind Crewe the fourth placed team.

Great shout.

We've been drawn against Liverpool 3 times, beaten them once and taken them to replays the other two times.

We've drawn once in 4 matches against Chelsea (thank you Mildenhall).

We've beaten Forest three times (most recently courtesy of a certain F. Eastwood) out of 11, with one draw.

I have been watching Southend for 50 years and that Port Vale game I still find it hard to believe what happend in the second half .I dont remember any booing at full time but ther must of been most supporters had looks disbelief and disillusion on there faces .

Stockport away about 5 years ago, half the away end was thrown out by half time

Good times
I remember this,Stewarding was very over the top. They were surprised we took so many fans i think. Was a new ground for many so more fans travelled. And the next season we went there we were put behind the goal in a stand with no roof when there was plenty of room at the side under cover for us.

Against Rushden and Diamonds for me. 2-0 down at half time, then the legend that was Barrington Belgrave stepped up and changed the game giving as a 4-2 win! Never forget that!

that's the one that came to mind, bitterly cold boxing day. First half, southend couldn't put two passes together. only time I think they were deservedly booed off. BUT WHAT A SECOND HALF

It was certainly played at The Valley. Not sure how long they had been back there though.

A result ill never forget was in 1997.
Gillingham 1-2 Southend. I wasnt at the game but was watching BBC Final Score. I think Nicky Southall had put Gills 1-0 up after like 4 minutes. I was watching the reults all come through when either Boere or Coulbault scored to equalise in the 90th. I was cheering away when suddenly Boere or Coulbault scored to make it 2-1 literally seconds later it seemed. Cant remember which way round they scored but i have literally never shouted so much ! Nowadays when we are 1-0 down with a minute to go, i always remember the Gills Match in '97 and think its going to happen again sometime !!!

Well if you can raise the dead then maybe it could happen again

Blues 4-2 Swansea

Eastwood debut, scoring after 7 seconds and going on to score 2 more! Along with Prior's goal in there somewhere

Best league home game i've been to, no doubt.

Blues: Ryan Clarke; Duncan Jupp; Lewis Hunt; Adam Barrett; Carl Pettefer; Spencer Prior; Che Wilson; Mark Gower (Jimmy Corbett - 30'); Kevin Maher; Wayne Gray; Freddy Eastwood (Michael Kightly - 90')

Swansea: Willy Gueret; Samuel Ricketts; Kevin Austin; Alan Tate; Garry Monk; Kristian O'Leary; Roberto Martinez; Bradley Maylett (Adrian Forbes - 59'); Lee Trundle; Paul Connor (Scott P Fitzgerald - 70'); Andy Robinson
