How bout a post about politics, haven't had one of them in a while, thoughts on Labour, Torys ? etc.

Personally, im liking what Howard is saying and think he might make a good PM, but im not a conservative.

Thoughts ...

Id like another party to be in charge. I completely dislike Labour and dont like their views on things. The only thing I do agree with is the ban on Fox hunting.

New party.

Mo Molum as leader
Mark Thomas as Home secutary
Gordon Brown (still as) Chancellor (what get rid of the best one we've had in years !)

Billy Connoly as Foreign minister.
Minister for Arts and culture Rolf Harris

Guy Fawkes is making a come back on November 5th.

And how much do you actually know about the BNP?

BNP are now just an extreme group of racists thugs.

However, with the smilie I'll assume that was tongue in cheek!

Frankly, Brown aside, all of the politicians around at the moment are sh*te. Luke - you can only think that Howard is remotely human, because you're too young to remember what he was like as Home Secretary.

"The" Jeremy Paxman interview - where Paxman asked the same question 14 times, and Howard failed to answer it on each occasion - remains one of those seminal moments in British and Tory Party politics. Combine that with Ann Widdicombe's "something of the night" comment about him, and you're left with the unfortunate but unavoidable conclusion for Howard that, quite simply, he is unelectable.

Moreover, the Tory party as it currently stands, is unelectable. Its grass-roots membership has an average age of at least 50, and has the mind-set of a bygone era. They will therefore continue to elect rabid fools as leaders... Michael Howard... IDS...? Are you seriously suggesting that either has the stature to lead this country?

The Tories need to decide sharpish what they want to do. Kinnock and Blair between them have cleverly and successfully turned Old (i.e. socialist, left-wing, working-class) Labour into New (centrist, middle-class, "spin") Labour. Of course, they had to do that because of Maggie Thatcher, who single-handedly altered the political spectrum from one where old socialist values of tax & spend and top rate tax of 90% were perfectly acceptable, into one where council house dwellers became property owners, where low interest rates were all-important, and where suddenly the affluent southeners did not want to give all their tax to the government.

Labour had to change, and so it did. They're effectively re-branded Thatcherites with a heart - and, especially with Gordon Brown at No. 11, they will continue to prosper.

Since the Tories are made up of everyone who was a spotty geek at school (if you've seen Harry Enfield's "Tory Boy" character, you'll know what I mean), no one wants to vote for them.

So, they either have to change their membership (pretty difficult) or become a very radical right-wing party: out of Europe, scale back the NHS, drastically reduce tax and so on.

Plenty of people would vote for such a party. The Tories now need to find a leader with the balls and the charisma to pull that off. Oliver Letwin, at the moment, looks like the man most likely... although I'm not convinced. He's still got a touch of the Tory Boy about him. Portillo could have done it, but just lost interest, and lost friends in high places in the party.

So that means we've got one lot we don't trust and are bored of, and one lot who you'd be embarrassed to be seen in the pub with, let alone want running your country.

The inescapable conclusion is simply that next year will see another record low turn-out for the election... perhaps, shamefully, we'll dip below 50% of the electorate bothering to vote.

Which, alas, will allow highly motivated parties and activists (such as those racist pigs, the BNP) to do rather well.

That's what I reckon, anyway.

Matt

politics is just a bunch of arse really who ever gets in power how ever well meaning just end up jobs for the boys as power corrupts.

If I wasn't so determined to vote, then I don't think I'd bother. I think bland is the word.

...And them doing well is a very very scary thought for the future of our country.

On the turnout note though, anyone who doesn't actually use their vote I have no time to discuss politics with.

They always say - "my vote doesn't make a difference"

This is not feasible, but lets just say for arguments sake that the 50% all supported the same party then they would change who is governing the country so could make a difference!

Exactly - everyone should use their vote! Specifically any of you who have turned or who will turn 18 since the last election has a duty to use your new found right, whoever you vote for.

I cannot wait for the next election. Hopefully I'll be approached by one of the extreme right wing candidates supposed to be standing in Southend to approach me and ask if they can rely on my vote. I'll even wear an England shirt and get my hair cut short on polling day so I fit the stereotype of someone who'll vote for them. Then as they stand outside the polling station I can tell them exactly what low life scum I, as a white proud englishman, think they are. Should be fun!
