Official Match Thread Shrewsbury Town v Southend United

So Powell got the England role because he's black ?

The players didn't get injured between the time Powell took over and the end of the season. Did he change the training regime, days off etc at the start of the next season then?

Yes. He’s certainly not got it on credentials. The FA is absolutely riddled with it at the moment. Michael Johnson, Kevin Betsy, Chris Powell. Tick, Tick, Tick

Yep. Come on. Actually start thinking about it. As soon as he got to put his own stamp on it with staff, players in and out, scheduling. He absolutely ripped the arse out of it. He was ****e

In your opinion. If they have to employ black coaches then they are going to want good ones for the benefit of England.

Powell did a great job at Charlton with none of the injuries you say his style causes and despite what you say about injuries, I'm still convinced with a fit squad we would have been nowhere near where we were last season.

I was a CP fan and don’t believe he should’ve been sacked and I still believe we’d be in a better position if he was still in charge....

However it isn’t debatable whether or how he got the England role....it was stated quite clearly that it’s part of the FAs directive and part of a program to promote the use of BAME coaches.

It wasn’t based on his coaching ability although he’s probably, or is, qualified as necessary.....as are lots of white English coaches .....

This is a whole different discussion for a whole different time but if they were good coaches they wouldn't need a specific scheme to get them jobs

Charlton used 34 players in that season. We used 32 last season

That's far from a settled side considering they won the title. The players they had to call on in reserve were obviously better because they had a huge budget

I don't doubt for a minute the BAME coaches promotion, but there are plenty of black coaches out there they could have chosen, so why pick Powell?

There were more than just CP involved. It’s an ongoing project and it reads like the roles are for trial periods of time.

He’s high profile, non controversial, articulate, educated and experienced. Why not? He’s almost perfect FA material.

Having seen him play for Fulham and Southend i am not a fan of his lack of team play and his lack of helping the team out pressing etc. He did it Saturday for the first time but other than that he hasn’t. He scores goals yes but there is more to it that’s that, if a team is struggling then all 11 players have to work hard.

Re cox, sp you can see its not just a Humphrys thing, this season he seems to be not at the races, could be not fit but he looks to have lost a yard of pace and not pressing like he used to do. He always closed down every defender, said to my son that’s what makes him awkward as he gives no one any time. Could be he has been played woefully out of position but he needs to get back to the leading scorer of the last 3 years and soon,

If Humphrys does as he did Saturday and cox plays as he did last season (when everyone was saying how good he was) then we have a strike force to push us up the table. However as I have said many times it isn’t just one player its the whole team all 11 and subs coming on that need to look at themselves and improve.

He only made two appearences for Fulham's first team.Which game(s) did you see?

Right.

Alex Revell was one of the hardest working strikers I’ve ever seen at Roots Hall. Yet he was judged on his goal scoring ability, and that wasn’t very good.

Blair Sturrock was nothing, if not a workhorse up front. He was judged on his goal scoring ability, same as Revs.

Matt Harrold always put a shift in, but he got lambasted for his goal scoring ability.

Only at Southend, can we discover a young, English striker, who has a goal scoring ratio of 1 in 2, for a team who avoided relegation by 3 minutes, hasn’t won a single league game all season....... and still find ways to moan about him.

As @Ayrshire Blue said, imagine what he could do in a good team.
Firstly Southend didnt discover him, Fulham did, and secondly i was saying he has to play as he did on Saturday. Needs to work harder than he had in some games. I was also saying that his lack of fitness last year was due to his injury which is why Cox looks poor this as he surely isn’t 100% as not had a full pre season. I also said i am taking emotion of the Sunderland game out of the equation, who ever scored the goal that kept us up would be a hero but one day doesn’t make a star. HUmphrys has it all (Fulham said this when he was there) but he doesn’t put it all together and can be lazy and in our situation that’s a problem.

Strikers are judged on goal scoring record and his is good, but when we are struggling he has to work back, sadly he doesn’t that often., Waddock even said we need more from him out of possession, ie when we don’t have the ball.

Sturrock was awful i agree

Eastwood was exceptionally lazy. Nobody remembers that, they just remember the goals.

The difference is, Fred was lucky, as he had a decent supporting cast, to do the donkey work for him, which allowed him to focus solely on putting the ball in the oppositions net.

Would Eastwood have been as successful, if he were also expected to drop deep & close-down opponents?

As a striker, Humphrys’ job, first and foremost, is to score goals. Currently, he’s doing that, and doing it at a rate that we don’t see that often at Roots Hall. I believe that in a decent team, he could be even better.

So, instead of asking him to work harder, I think we should be asking the team behind him, to follow suit & play to his strengths, because this lad really does have something special about him, the likes of which we haven’t seen since Eastwood.

People been calling out for a 20 plus striker ,now we have one and maybe just maybe 2 their still moaning, the second could very well be goodship if used properly, we are blessed with strikers allow them to do what they do best and thats put that bloody round ball in the back off the net,Its the midfield etc that need too work harder.

It’s a fair point, i do not disagree, but that should relate to all that play upfront as well. People overlook cox’s involvement in humphrys goal as well.

I am not saying he should work back but maybe close down defenders.

There was a manager once called Alex Ferguson who said defending starts with the forwards, if the likes of Giggs, Nistelrooy, Cantona etc can close defenders down who have th ball then i think those in our team can too.

The midfield and defence should not be exempt from what I am saying, as I have said all 11 need to pull together and work.
