They had a clear out and signed 10 players off the batI think the Grimsby example is very relevant to us. Relegated alongside us last season but have started this season in complete contrast, 4 points clear at the top. How? Why? What are the main drivers? Is there anything we can copy from their success given how short term their reverse of fortunes have been?
Has this question been posed to Stan, I’m sure he must have looked closely at Grimsby so would love to know what he thinks about this.
Fair. I would have thought there would be more to it than simply signing better players but maybe it is that simple. They had a clear out and signed 10 players off the bat
Well, I would say it helped that Phil Brown did not manage them!Fair. I would have thought there would be more to it than simply signing better players but maybe it is that simple.
With Stans 'Head of Recruitment' dont forget...They had a clear out and signed 10 players off the bat
I think that factor has been a bit over egged. Paul Hurst kept the nucleus of the relegated side, (five were in last Saturday's team), signed a couple of players from his Shrewsbury days, one of whom, McAteer, has proved to be a prolific goalscorer this season, plus another player, Crookes, he has had his eye on for some time. There a few short term loanees possibly the result of this recruitment persons involvement but the main reason for their success is a manager who knows his way around this league. Hurst is old enough to be experienced but not a dinosaur like Brown plus the fact that there was a change of ownership as well. With Stans 'Head of Recruitment' dont forget...

Spanking new training ground to add to the mix as well. I thought Grimsby (and Walsall) were worse than dire (even us) last season. It just shows what can be done.Fair. I would have thought there would be more to it than simply signing better players but maybe it is that simple.
Absolutely and really hope it stops the incessant "NoBODy wANts tO sigN for Uz".... if Grimsby can do it in their dire state, anyone can... including us.Spanking new training ground to add to the mix as well. Completely agree. Thought they were dreadful. Can’t believe where they are in the league to be honest.Spanking new training ground to add to the mix as well. I thought Grimsby (and Walsall) were worse than dire (even us) last season. It just shows what can be done.
As I’ve said on another thread I have a Grimsby supporting mate who says it was getting rid of their bent chairman. Hugely positive atmospehere now twinned with a manager that’s got promoted from NL before.Completely agree. Thought they were dreadful. Can’t believe where they are in the league to be honest.
The thing that impresses me most is not that they have changed players because we have done that every season but they have gone from a losing to a winning mentality in such a short time period. This is the ingredient we are missing and have been for years. Losing feels ingrained in the fabric of Roots Hall right now.
And without being unkind Grimsby isn't somewhere you would have at the very top of places you would want to live either..Absolutely and really hope it stops the incessant "NoBODy wANts tO sigN for Uz".... if Grimsby can do it in their dire state, anyone can... including us.
