The end of BBC6 Music?

I like 6 music a lot. But more for the podcasts it has truth be told as I don't have a DAB radio. But it's odd how many people i know with one bought one purely for that station.

I bet the take up figures were huge in relation to 6 Music.

As for the slagging off of BBC3, I do get it. It's for a generation many people on here will never be part of, but it has given us some great stuff (Mighty Boosh initially, Nighty Night, Being Human, Monkey Dust, whether or not you like it Little Britain) and started loads of directors off in a tricky industry.

It's treading water right now though with utter garbage, but I think it COULD be great.

It's Anne Robinson getting £3,000,000 I don't agree with.

And that Kelvin MacKenzie guy can do one. Axe everything bar BBC 1, 2 and radio 4? Would they be the stations you like by any chance, you Tory / Murdoch suck up?

Very good point. Like you say they have provided some excellent entertainment in the past.

It'd be great if they could do that again though instead of the dross the channel trots out nowadays.

They use it as a training ground before letting the directors and writers lose on BBC. Most of the team from the first season of Being Human are now working on Dr Who. And some of the comedy writers learn their trade there and are then moved to BBC2 shows.

It's a shame they've stripped back a lot of decent stuff on there for the reality crap they churn out, but I guess it's cheap and in line with most of what the general public seem to sadly want if the trend across every other channel follows true on the Beeb as well.

I hope the commitment to new, more daring comedy and shows like Being Human mean that the good times are coming back to the channel.

I've written a few things for the BBC before but none of it has been broadcast.

In retrospect I shouldn't have called Arthur Fowler a **** for stealing the Christmas club money or threatened to kill him but we all know that if I was a public school Oxbridge type with the right friends my letters would have been included on Points of View.

Just recieved this (auto) email. Note the highlighted bit in bold - if you care about having a truly unique station on your dial please send a quick email to the BBC trust and support BBC6.

Thank you for contacting the BBC Trust, the governing body of the BBC, with your concerns about the future of the radio station 6Music.

As you may be aware, the proposal to close the station has come from the Director-General Mark Thompson as part of a wide ranging review of the BBC’s future strategy.

In July last year the BBC Trust challenged the Director-General to address questions about the scope of the BBC’s activities, focusing on how the BBC can most effectively deliver its public service mission and meet audience needs as well as deliver value for money. The full strategy, which is now available on the Trust’s website, is the Executive’s response to this challenge.

As part of his proposals to the Trust, which are focused on increasing the quality of the BBC’s output and setting a new direction for the BBC, the Director-General has proposed closing 6Music. The Trust is now consulting on all of these proposals, and we welcome your views.

We will of course take your email as a contribution to our consultation. Should you wish to know more about the overall strategy review and our public consultation, there is more information on the Trust’s website at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/our_work/strategy_review/index.shtml

To be clear, a decision on whether or not to close 6Music will need to be made by the BBC Trust and we will consider any formal proposal to do so very carefully.

Our consultation is open until 25 May 2010.
