Whole squad on furlough - or not!

If I had to guess, I’d say Sol is on £8k a week.

And if I continued guessing, I’d say that the combined wages for him, Cole, HH & Colbert are into the £20k-£25k a week bracket.

All guesswork, of course

?

What a brilliant guess ,al
That's what used to happen in the olden days. And players a lot better than the current crop used to do it without complaint.

Spot on with these comments

Can you imagine them having to do the laundry and clean older pros boots, would be a mutiny on their instagrams, hardest thing for them nowadays is to sing a song when coming onto the fold. The whole squad must now either pull together or leave,. End of the day facts do not lie, we are a basement club, that will struggle if we do not adapt quickly

Sol has to stop his poor man management and accept a much lower salary with his right hand men or again leave to pastures new, and not leave a legal document for unpaid contract on Ronsnies doormat

Have more appreciation for the management and squad if they accept its their fault and leave the club or fight as one come new season

Absolutely disgusted by the players refusing to go on Furlough. Talk about greed and no thought for the clubs financial position. And the fact that they took us down, makes it even worse. Do they really expect 100% wages without playing any games for months? They are payed to play games. Footballers have never had it so good wages wise, and yet they won't help out their club in it's hour of need. Expecting a scathing statement from RM soon.
There will be a lot of layers to this, playing devil's advocate you are talking about staff who've not been paid on time previously and I'm sure had very real fears that they wouldn't receive their pay, they stayed 'loyal' then. Not taking sides but not jumping on one either without knowing their rationale.

Presumably Sol and co have accepted being furloughed.
This may go some way to explaining the reported lack of contact between coaches and players.
And, those who are being let go ,and on more money, have voted that they will take the extra money of their contracts over the UK Guv scheme, not really a surprise is it?

It's the nature of football nowadays, especially from League one downwards. Loads of clubs have not payed their players, or payed them late. Southend payed up when they could. Players know when they sign that Southend has financial troubles and a recent history for late payments. Their agents would certainly have told them. Not saying it's right, but the whole game and money flow from the top needs restructuring to help stop this happening. Coming out of lockdown, there will be a lot more clubs not paying their players. The Premier League (not the clubs) had over £2billion sitting in the bank last figure I saw. That figure grows each year(barring a virus). It's doing nothing in the bank, just gaining a bit of interest. They can easily afford to filter down say £100million for the good of football, and their foundations, but on condition of wage caps, so it goes to the clubs and not players, and it wouldn't affect them in the slightest.

There’s nothing in the furlough “rules” preventing Sol or his staff from contacting players or other employees on non-work matters, such as checking in on their fitness and well being.
I believe fitness is a major part of a professional athletes skill set?

Maybe if our owner wasnt such a **** in the first place and was trustworthy when dealing with staff wages historically the players would be more understanding in negotiating the pay now.

I have no idea what any of our players earn but when I read the average first team L1 salary is around £1.5k per week, I struggle to believe Luke Hyam is/was on £4K.

If they want paying, then they ought to do something to justify it. As playing is out of the question, then definitely supply them with a few paintbrushes and tins of paint and socially distance them around the ground for a spruce up.
The justification was signing the contact on wages and terms Ron Martin offered

They signed contracts as professional footballers, there wasn't too much evidence last season that they fulfilled that description

well that’s either down to poor recruitment in the first place or just poor coaching or man management during the season??

At some point even highly paid footballers have to take some responsibility for the effort and performance they put in - they might think it’s just Ron’s money or the clubs money that pays them every week, but in fact ultimately it’s ours. Many work damned hard to be able to be able to afford to go and watch them play. So if you don’t like Ron, or don’t like Sol that’s fine but don’t let that give the players a free pass on the effort, performances or when they think furlough is for other people.

If the players have a crap attitude either that was a failure of recruitment which failed to detect that (Ron often talks about doing his due diligence). OR perhaps, just perhaps they may feel aggrieved by something that happened at the club (or maybe something that was said or not said).

Theoretically suppose you joined on the basis of certain promises about what was happening with club, sold the dream of you like and then agreed terms. If it then became apparent that things promised weren’t happening, then wages were late causing problems with some players ability to pay mortgage, some of your colleagues were perhaps treated even more unfairly (in their eyes) and then performances on pitch were poor, with chairmen and manager casting aspersions about some players within the camp etc.

if any of that theoretically happened then you were asked to effectively take a massive pay cut (furlough) but you’d been advised that you legally didn’t have to accept it, do you not see why they might not, bear in mind it isn’t 1 or 2players we are talking about but the whole lot. Is this all down the entire squad having an awful attitude or might it be reasonable to consider that something else is at play??

The trouble is the suggestion was it’s all down to Ron and the management team- which is equally absurd. Is it so unreasonable in these times of polarised views to suggest that it might not be all one side or the other but something in between? Or do we have to be now a hater or lover but nothing in between? I suggest the players are absolutely not without some responsibility? Is that suggestion so outrageous?

Sol will have taken a big money hit being furloughed. I hope he is networking a few good signings for us.
If a player is on 6k a month and had a few months left on his contract and wasn't getting a new one with us why would he accept the £1.8k guv scheme when he knows in a few months he will be on possibly bugger all.

well something happened that made over 25 players all decide that they weren’t going to sign furlough agreements. Some will choose to believe the players are all greedy mercenaries, others may find it easier to reconcile the situation because of how they feel the chairman and management have treated them.

Will be interesting to hear from the PFA in the subject in the near future

And some will think it’s something in between- as much as a middle ground is now strictly verboten. As you say people will believe what they want to.
