If you encourage vigilantism you will very soon have a lawless society.
Death is an easy way out.
He is clearly not safe to be out among the public so should be locked away until the day he dies - old and bored. That costs money - everything costs money - we are the 6th richest nation in the world - we can afford to lock up dangerous people.

Taking the law into your own hands has worked very well in many cases, which is why the status quo are so against it.

If death is so easy why does nearly everyone on death row fight for years to avoid execution. Just to live in conditions that would be deemed inhuman in Britain.

We in Britain have never had Jim Crow laws so you can't compare us to the USA.

I do know of several successful stories here in the South of Essex but they have never been for racial reasons. Unless of course you include the gang of Eastern Europeans being 'escorted' out of own after they made the mistake of demanding money with menaces to a business owned by a well known Southend character. I did hear that other businesses and the police were quite pleased with the result.

I have heard of a paediatrician being beaten up by a mob because they thought he as a paedophile .

don't you just love a battle of the meaningless anecdote.....

Yes the press loved that story, although they weren't beaten up. The press won't every have any stories of why there are no muslim grooming gangs in Northern Ireland. Or why Jon Venables could never live there even with a false identity.

Not Jim Crow laws as such but certainly overt and implicit racial discrimination.I'm sure you've heard of the "No coloureds,no Irish ,NO pets" signs which were common in London and elsewhere until the late 60's at least.

I'd also recommend a read of Clair Wills (an Irish academic's) excellent Lovers and Strangers :An Immigrant History of Post-War Britain.

Racial discrimination is nothing to do with vigilantism which can obviously be dangerous when a mob takes over or the more controlled law into your own hands.

I don't need to read any accounts by Irish academics thank you. I prefer the first hand accounts from my Mother or her 8 brothers and sisters, some of whom married other Irish people. I have also read the hate letters that my own mother received living in Hullbridge during the 70's and into the 80's. She once even received a hate valentines card.

Over my 40 odd years in the building industry I have met many Irishmen from all parts and found most absolute top fellas with the most wonderful sense of humour,in fact I have had and have many good friends from the north and south of Ireland.

vigilante gangs would very quickly set up a new level of what is acceptable and violence would rocket. Standard level of psychology - people look for societal norms and set their own morality with that as a benchmark.

Why would death row prisoners fight execution? Because it's the end. Do you ever really feel ready for the end? Those that are on death row who believe in God would fear the burning flames of Hell - so presumably not look forward to that. As I'm an atheist I believe when you die that is the end, so I'd rather they carry on fearing death and the boredom of life rather than have the calm of nothingness.

Shame you an atheist, sounds like you would make a good preacher somewhere in the bible belt.

Agreed. But there's no doubt the KKK were big fans.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vigilante :winking:

Pity, Claire Wills' mother was an Irish staff nurse, one of the first wave of immigrants to the NHS in the late 40's.No idea who she married-or indeed if she did-,quite possibly a Sherman though ,as she's working in Princeton now.

(As it happens,I come from two large English working class families, both with about 8 uncles and aunts on either side).

You can PM it to me, I won't mind. Then I can hunt him down and serve proper justice.

That pair of evil scumbags had the life of riley in their new lodgings after their original conviction and 8 years was a joke. It was pre-meditated murder, they planned it in advance
